SAMURAI FLAMENCO #13 Gets REALLY Dark, Doesn't It?

Episode #13 -- Watch & Learn. Break my heart!

Can’t go much darker than a young, innocent fan getting horrifically pulverized under collapsing rubble, can we? Hoo boy…

The show’s getting into some of the tougher ethical concerns of supeheroics (and handling them with the sort of levelheadedness I’ve appreciated in a lot of Gen Urobuchi’s shows). I appreciate the acknowledgment that even these demigods have their limits; and at a certain point, they must unavoidably be partial about who they save. It reminds me of that scene in THE DARK KNIGHT where Batman doesn’t hesitate for a second about going after Rachel instead of Harvey Dent because, well… she’s his girlfriend.

The other bit of somber deconstruction I appreciate here is the Flamengers taking a moment to calculate the sheer number of villains they’d logically have to get through at the pace they’re going. I’m not as well-versed in the tropes of tokusatsu, but I’m sure this is a semi-parodic dig at how day-to-day affairs would start to look if anybody was actually living in a Super Sentai show that just kept going on from season to season.

Anybody with a bit of common sense would start to question where all these bigger bad guys were coming from? Or where the logic is in, say, evil kings eventually getting revealed to be subordinate to a greater number of generals (who’ve obviously been hastily added by a writing staff tasked to keep milking a premise).

We’re entering the nightmare portion of this long-form dream, and I’m going to harp on that again because the show’s laying the foreshadowing down rather thickly, yet again. Can’t get much more blatant than a scene where Samumenco wakes up screaming from a nightmare about a horrible catastrophe that didn’t actually happen, can you?

I still feel like I’m waiting for some other shoe to drop. There’s no way we’re supposed to be taking any of this at face value. Not when there’s bad guy named Domestic Violence #1. The whammy’s coming. I know it.

Watch "An X Empty x Threat" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the last episode.

You have to give it to this show that it has done things few have dared to. It can go from gritty dark to sqeeky clean silly. There is a apreciation for heroes an how people want to be them or how they hate them. It shows how people try to pull them down as well as lift them up.

This show should help start a gene " deconstruction" right in there with action,shonen,drama an comedy.

I don't think an anime will ever have a normal vigilante plot. Every one I've seen turns into something crazy

@Marshal Victory:

Agreed with you. This series and Flowers of Evil did something daring. I remember in the Wishes for Anime 2014, most folks wish for something different. Well, you have this show and Flowers of Evil. Samurai Flamenco is easy to get in unlike Flowers of Evil.

Next episode is going to be awesome!
