SAMURAI FLAMENCO #12 Uses Curry to Explain Life!

Episode #12 -- Watch & Learn. What does it all mean?!

I’ve forgotten what represents what, but I’m pretty sure the show’s been stringing together a long-form metaphor that conflates curry rice with Flamenco’s exploits. Yes, I’m serious.

It came up a lot earlier on, when our pal was just toying with the thought of vigilantism, and his cop buddy was musing on the varying levels of authenticity that a curry connoisseur encounters. Again, having not re-watched those episodes, I can’t recall what the specifics were, but I know it isn’t a coincidence that curry’s being brought up again as the show’s going hog wild with this fantasy.

(And yes, I’m still convinced that we’re now a few episodes deep into the series’ dream portion).

Unless I’m misremembering something major, my best guess at the point is that if you really believe in yourself, and your dreams, and you’re serious about chasing after them, then you can’t settle for anything second rate in any part of your life. And this episode addresses one of the less pleasant sides of that: namely, disassociating yourself from negative old friends.

The fact that Sammy’s cop buddy is continuing to be a grouchy naysayer - - even in spite of the fantastical adventures Flamenco’s going on - - puts an even finer point on this. Flamenco’s observation that he needs to evolve out of seeking advice from the norms makes it even clearer. Success can feel like moving on to another reality where so much more is possible. In this show, that’s what literally happens. And that very real insight is big part of why this show’s proven to be a much more substantial deconstruction of tokusatsu than GATCHAMAN CROWDS.

Of course, while we’re on the subject of realism, the show totally dropped the ball by softening the gag where Flamenco Girl literally just rolls out of the closet. She’s been missing for days, she’s expressed a serious fetish for men in uniform, she's staying at cop buddy's apartment… and somehow she's not hooking up with him?

Watch, "Document! We are the Flamengers!!” and decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous episode.

Well just because one is offered a "meal" does not mean one has to partake. The cops a good guy in every sence.

Also Tom welcome to the deconstruction theory group! Now it still could be a dream ,but it still has a greater deconstruction of heroic themes reguardless if it is a dream or not.

The cop has a girlfriend who hasn't been revealed yet. I'm wonder why his girlfriend hasn't visit him. I would like to see her expression since he's living with girl in a closet like Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia from Bleach. I'll wait and see if this dream theory is true. I hate it if it were a dream. Some series troll fans and do it well. Samurai Flamenco did lost some folks after ep. 7. To change it again, it would be crazy.

@takashichea: Um you just may have spoted a homage to bleach with that comment bro. It does a homage/parody dance rather subtle.

@Marshal Victory:

Well, that counts as a good list of a rare anime trope, Living with a Girl in my Closet.

my best guess at the point is that if you really believe in yourself, and your dreams, and you’re serious about chasing after them, then you can’t settle for anything second rate in any part of your life.

A good advice to college students who just changed majors.

On-topic:

I think after this episode had the most Tokusatu Power Rangers (I can't spell this name) action. Or was it episode 14? Can't wait to see your impressions on it.

@takashichea: Hmm that quite reminds me of what I said liked about shonen. Also the girlfirend is like Norms wife from Cheers we neve see her. That type of trope has been used before but rarely in anime. The always off screen character. At least none are coming to mind atm any way.

Hmm this show sounds more and more interesting after every episode you talk about....is it deconstructing this genre like Madoka does with Magical Girls? Don't like or am familiar with the genre here as much as I was magical girl but still might be worth checking out.
