SAMURAI CHAMPLOO #17 -- Watch & Learn

They're all hiding something from eachother. Can't you tell?

Maybe this isn’t the most pressing topic point, but it’s been bugging me for a long time and I’ve got to bring it up. Perhaps one of you more learned lunatics can set it straight for me. I know that Hiroaki Hirata, the voice actor of Kotetsu from TIGER & BUNNY and Mutta from SPACE BROTHERS, is not the same person as Kazuya Nakai, the voice actor of Mugen here - - but they still sound incredibly similar. Both of them have this sort of gravelly register that can get so wild 'n quirky. I’m starting to wonder if maybe this is a case of me recognizing them sharing an accent from some specific region of Japan? Like both of them having Southern drawls?

Somebody fill me in, because this keeps distracting me.

Anyway, this capper wasn’t as phenomenal as that last two-parter’s capper, but at this point we’re really just comparing levels of brilliance. As some of you lunatics suggested, we’re starting to get some stronger hints that Fuu’s “Samurai Who Smells of Sunflowers” might not actually exist. If he did kill her mother or her father, you wouldn’t expect her to broach the topic as flippantly as she does in the trio’s little dialog about him, would you?

Everybody’s got something to hide, obviously. We’ve already gotten a full-tilt exploration of the skeletons rattling around in Mugen’s closet, and I dug how Jin handles the situation so… reservedly when his own demons start catching up with him. The soft and gentle way he kills the old colleague who’s come to avenge their master felt like the chanbara equivalent of some executive shredding a document or discretely tucking an important notice into his pocket. Despite the unity these kids reassert at the end, I don’t expect he’ll ever bring this encounter up to them, either

…which again shows how much more effectively this show handles its long arc in comparison to COWBOY BEBOP. I’m actually, you know, curious, interested and excited when these characters’ pasts start rearing their ugly heads.

Jin still has some story to go. It's not over yet. I also dug how calm he was about the situation.

I am also curious if there was ever an arrow assassin at any point in the past. At this period in history that would have been pretty scary.
