SAMURAI 7 #5 - - Watch & Learn

Clench your fists for clumsiness!

What do you want to bet that this Drifter’s surveying skills will eventually prove crucially valuable to defeating the ro-bandits? It’s cute how they’re setting this meek field engineer up to possess scholarly (or however you’d describe surveying?) skills that are likely to prove far more useful than his swordsmanship. And it’s funny how the show actually sort-of just walks over the fact that his stunt with the tension wires nearly killed all the good guys along with all of the bad guys.

Maybe the blowback for that nearly disastrous trick is going to be played out next episode. In the ongoing comparison with SEVEN SAMURAI, I’d say that this show so far has done a much better job of conveying how desperate the peasants’ plight is for the fact that they’ve really got to scrape the barrel for allies. As of yet, they’ve only really recruited two credible samurai, and one of them is a disgraced possible washout while the other’s seems to only be hanging with them because it seems like a goof.

Yeah, how else would interpret that scene where he coaches the one kid on how he should solicit potential mercs with professions of love? The guy’s certainly capable, but you get the sense that he’s playing along so he can secretly laugh at these idiots.

And then there’s Mifune. Yeah, I’ll call him “Mifune” because I prefer that over his real name in this show. Like I’ve said, it’s been a long time since I watched the original flick, but I feel like they’ve ratcheted this guy’s hilarious, showboating overcompensation here by several degrees. He’s been adequate in combat, so far, but you’ve got to love how his insecurities compel him to butt into every conversation (whether it concerns him or not) and pick fights with every fights with basically everybody he sees (whether it’s due or not). It’s fitting that the lineage identifies him as 13 ‘cause, well… you know.

I kind of don't want these guys to get their act together, because this clumsiness has been so fun to watch, so far.

Watch this episode, "The Drifter” here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

Tom you're right. Mifune reminds me of a cross between Rai on Tai Chi Chasers and Walley West on JLU. Good article!

Kikuchiyo is slowly becoming my favorite character. He makes the show great since most of the time, it's pretty boring when it's slow. The fight scenes are great, and the CG is pretty awkward.
