RWBY Volume 2 #1 -- Special Review

Punk rock. Right here. Step up to it.

We’re sampling the summer season’s selection! Check out our other pilot write-up’s –

Matt Murphy caught more of the Volume One than I did (I only got to see the first episode), but I’ve always still appreciated the kind of garage band ethos RWBY exudes. Is the product rough around the edges at times? Does it sometimes look like an animation software demo? Sure, but that’s really part of charm.

Lord knows, I’ve seen countless anime that had far more tools and personnel at their disposal, but none of that mattered because there wasn’t any heart behind it. Flash and polish is nothing is nothing without enthusiasm, and I can dig how Rooster Teeth is making the most of what they have. The fight in the cafeteria, with the towering stack of tables and the inventive use of food weapons, is an excellent example of that. You can smell the sweat and taste the tears that went into that - - a small animation crew pushing themselves and their gear as far as they can to entertain you.

Story wise, this feels a lot like a lost FINAL FANTASY 7 cut scene, and I’m sure the line of inspiration is very direct. Of course, like any FF game, there’s really only one point of entry, and if you haven’t watched from the beginning, then this isn’t going to be the best jumping on point. Certainly, I enjoyed the bounty hunters’ mean fake-out with the convict-cum-bookkeep, but I also don’t feel like I got enough of a proper intro to either of them to really feel that scene.

And again, that’s fine. More so than any other show I’ve watched on here, RWBY is a series I enjoy for the nature of its existence. It’s admirable of Rooster Teeth to keep the momentum RED Vs. BLUE started to push machinima into new content, and these are definitely getting more flashy and polished as they go along. I’m pumped to see how this Volume,and each forthcoming one, is going to shape up.

Watch "Best Day Ever" and decide for yourself.

The Final Fantasy vibe you picked up was because Monty Oum of Rooster Teeth did a project called Dead Fantasy. I love RWBY for its fight choreography and its art style. It has improved from season 1. I'm hoping to see how they improved in terms of character and story telling in volume 2. Episode 1 was pretty much hyping up the new animations.

Oh don't forget to check out 's The RWBY Club discussion if you guys and gals want to share about future episodes.

Best food fight animated this year!

Yes kinda FINAL FANTASY 7 like but its got its own feel as ya watch the series. For a short ( not full 30 minutes more like 15 to 12 ) they make great use of the time to move the story along.

Was meaning to check out Red vs Blue on amazon prime as they have all of it. Just never got around to it.

I can just imagine what Matt Murphy would say about RWBY, and I'd probably agree with him. I was highly disappointed with the series- well, what I watched of it.

Here is his review, RWBY #1-6 -- Special Review if you haven't read it yet.

@Marshal Victory:

They need to wait on making AMV. Not much materials due to having a short episode run.

ok it it bad that i haven't watch RWBY in till today and now im all caught up. WOW this series is so good and this is probably one of the best english voices i have heard in a long time = )

Marshal Victoryon Aug. 1, 2014 at 6:24 p.m.

@waybig1010101: Um it should be its made in Texas. The singer of the opening I thought was the same who voiced Ruby Rose but its not. Casey Lee Williams is the singer an the voice actress for Ruby is Lindsay Jones.

Also note shows writer Monty Oum voices Lie Ren

@takashichea: One guy has made 5 or 6 of them already. Also they have a video game in the works that started as a fan made project. Its called " RWBY: Grim Eclipse"

Ordered the 1st season for cheep on dvd today. Can not find the sound track on cd tho. Yeah I like to rip mp3 to a quality better than just a download. I am weird like that :/

waybig1010101on Aug. 1, 2014 at 6:25 p.m.

@Marshal Victory: everything good comes from texas = D

@Marshal Victory: @waybig1010101:

At first, I didn't get used to the voice acting in RWBY. I can't tell if they improved or is it me getting used to their voices. It's like the dub and sub thing for me. Sometimes, their voices are over dramatic or flat.

Sometimes, I feel the music is bit louder than the voices which is a bit inaudible. Making me turn up the volume up more often to hear what the characters had said. Not sure if I'm deaf.

I commend them on the Voice actresses because as I heard this was their first time voicing characters.

waybig1010101on Aug. 1, 2014 at 6:31 p.m.

@takashichea: well i enjoy it and the voices are really good at animating the characters to me and assist in what the character need to do, regardless; if they are telling jokes or fighting.

Marshal Victoryon Aug. 1, 2014 at 6:33 p.m.

@waybig1010101: Considering most of the day I listen to radio from there I would not argue against that.

waybig1010101on Aug. 1, 2014 at 6:35 p.m.

@Marshal Victory: lol :3

@waybig1010101: @Marshal Victory:

I guess I'm not used to English voices. I always did love Korra's VA cast, but those guys and gals had experience. RWBY has improved.

WayBig: Did you see this vid? Black Trailer is one of their earlier works, hyping the series. I linked you to Crunchyroll's vids.

If you can't see it, I give you a guest pass.

waybig1010101on Aug. 1, 2014 at 6:39 p.m.

@takashichea: yeah im watching it right now

Marshal Victoryon Aug. 1, 2014 at 8:34 p.m.

@takashichea: Oh found a cd copy of the sound track. vol 1 is two cds ! http://store.roosterteeth.com/products/rwby-volume-1-soundtrack That will have to go till next month as I some of the art supplies this month. Maybe in month or two will have something worth posting in the art forum.
