Rumor Alert: No More Live-Action Akira?

No Akira?! Laaaaame!

Remember how a few days ago I posted about all the live-action anime/manga films scheduled for 2011? And how some of them may not actually happen, much less by 2011?

Well, it seems that the first casualty from the list is the Leonardo DiCaprio-produced, Warner Bros.-distributed, and Ruairi Robinson-directed live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's seminal manga Akira.

The project, which was set to be two films, is allegedly “dead as a doornail.” The movie site Bloody Disgusting, which originally broke news about the film, confirmed the demise with two individual sources, though it's still technically a rumor until official confirmation appears, if it ever does.

Rest in peace, cool-sounding live-action Akira flicks. Rest in peace. (Via The Anime Blog.)

Oh man, chances were it was going to be totally ruined, but I was hoping to still hoping to see people get crushed by physic powers.

That's one more anime saved from a likely fail live action adaption.

No way... Live-Action Akira was going to be a Travis-ty. Get it? Travis? Travesty? Aaaaaw, heck!

darn...oh wait...YAY!!

dicaprio?  that couldnt have gone well.

@Stigsan: Well, he was producing, not starring in. That pretty much just means he provides the dollars. Even if he was providing some creative direction, well, he did pretty well producing AND starring in The Aviator. He's also in on that Ninja Scroll pic and a biopic about the guy who founded Atari, if you're questioning his geek cred.
