Rumor Alert: Live-Action Paprika?

Not quite sure how I feel about this rumor.

Paprika
Paprika
Paprika is a visual masterpiece by Satoshi Kon that explores what happens when the realm of dreaming begins to blur with the realm of waking-- beautifully animated and phenomenally written as well.

Bu now a site called MovieHole is reporting that German auteur Wolfgang Petersen, whose work you're probably already familiar with (The NeverEnding Story!) is attached to direct a live-action film of Paprika. They provide no source for said news, and I there's no listing on IMDb Pro for such a film at this time, and I haven't seen anyone else report on it except using MovieHole as the source.

In other words, this is a big fat rumor. And unfortunately, I don't think anyone I could try to contact (like, say, Madhouse) would know. I'm going to try sending out a cold call to Petersen's agent, but no guarantees there. We may just have to wait.

Now, the anime film is based an Yasutaka Tsutsui's novel of the same name, so it's not clear that Petersen would be remaking Kon's film so much as the novel that inspired it. That said, I can't imagine what live-action filmmaking could bring to the table that improves upon what Kon has done; bringing real people into the film is good, of course, but I don't think it would make up for the loss of being able to do things in full animation that you could never do elsewhere.

Still, though, it's such a strong concept that I'm going to keep an open mind. Should such a project make its way to a theater around me, I'd go in a heartbeat.  How about you?

(And now I have the NeverEnding Story theme song stuck in my head...)

usually when I'm thinking about the question "why is it good that there are anime?", I try to think of anime that I wouldn't expect to work as a live action movie.. which is tough, because special effects can do a lot now a days....    But I still thought that Paprika was an example of this ^^°
So, I have to admit, I would be rather sceptical.
