ROSARIO + VAMPIRE #1 -- Watch & Learn

It's about time Lilith from DARKSTALKERS got her own show.

Change of pace, lunatics. We’ll be taking a break from EUREKA SEVEN and YU YU HAKUSHO for a week or so to catch up with a number of fine, new Funimation titles that have come to my doorstep. Read my thoughts on…

As far as I can recall, they don’t ever specify what the ages of these characters are, so I’ll just go ahead and assume they’re all seniors and feel safe that this isn’t tricky.

Once again, this show demonstrates how it really all comes down to execution. The notion of a school for monsters isn’t all too innovative. I’m pretty sure there was even a SCOOBY DOO special with the exact same premise. And this show is probably guilty of many of the same T&A excess that… *AHEM *… rub me the wrong way on other shows. But the difference, yet again, is that this has an amused self-awareness about all of that… and that self-awareness manifests in a fashion that’s actually funny.

Like the whole gag with this vampire girl sucking this dude’s life blood with what essentially works out to be a really rough hickey. That played well precisely because it knew how ridiculous the gooey-eyed heart fest was getting at the moment. It was able to have its red velvet cake and eat it, as it were.

So a fun way to kill a half hour. I don’t know if I’d be motivated to go out and kill another half hour this way, but that doesn’t diminish the moment. Perhaps it’s akin to making out with some random girl at a party, if you want to take it there.

Maybe this says more about my own, um, obsessions than anything, but I did have a lot of fun pretending this vampire girl was actually Lilith from DARKSTALKERS. I suppose only Japan has this uniquely sort of vampire who manages to be the girly girl and the hyper sexualized seductress at the same time.

Watch this episode, "New Life and a Vampire" and decide for yourself.

You're talking about the Scooby Doo special where they come across a school for the daughters of famous monsters, right? I've probably seen that movie 20 times. It was my favorite Scooby Doo-ANYTHING as a kid.

I was surprised that I liked it so much.

Every time Tom mentions the word tricky in an article, I immediately think of the Run DMC song...

Anyways, I enjoyed the manga version of this way more

I started watching this today too. They just added it to Netflix instant.

This was a really good show actually. I was pretty surprised. It's got fanservice, but it won't take itself too seriously, and is just fun to watch.

If only more of the show could be like that first screenshot and not the picture hulu is showing for the episode. Nice grab. So bored of highschool anime romcoms with a "twist". Check panty shots, jiggling, accidental naked viewings, wrong time wrong place, slapping, punching, flirting with one side getting embarrassed and a general lack of anyone actually wanting to be together; that's all a guess.

Even if they aren't seniors, whenever characters are drawn with actual curves I always imagine them to be like 19 even if they're supposed to be 14 because it's obvious what physical age they're going for except that highschool seems to be a more popular destination to drop them in. When they're as curvy as a young boy and hovering around four feet is when I have to decide if I want to continue watching or not go to jail.

Holy crap, Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School reference. I rented that movie every time I was sick from school as a kid. Jumbo Video probably made like sixty bucks off of me on that.

So this post actually has anime content, there's a kind of a "home for monsters" rather than school this season in Inu X Boku. Wonder if this is similar since I've never seen Rosario.

The anime is a fucking travesty compared to the manga. They pointlessly ramped up the fanservice x100 and eventually ignored all the good parts of the manga where things actually happen.

Supreme Marvelon Feb. 22, 2012 at 2:39 p.m.

Ever since I finished watching the second series a few years ago. I've been looking for something similar. I can tell you its hard to find something as good as this. Well, with good humour and funny characters.

Always assume that high school anime are just like American TV shows set in highschool. All the actors are 25 playing 16.

I had fun watching the show. I started buying the manga but I like the show better as far as entertainment goes.

+1 for bringing that sad truth to light. I own all of the manga volumes for Rosario + Vampire, and the anime does NOT do the franchise or manga justice. Things were switched around, events moved to different parts of the timeline, and the fanservice was cranked up to a high level compared to the manga.

In the manga, the characters develop nicely and the story/plot is quite more interesting than what the anime pulls off.

I will not say that the anime was bad, but it lacked some of the best content from the manga that would have made it truly spectacular.

If you want to see fanservice at it worst, here you go. The manga is a lot better since it has a lot more character.

ComicMan24on Feb. 23, 2012 at 1:14 a.m.

Can't say it was one of my favourites but it wasn't that bad.

ImmortalSaiyanon Feb. 23, 2012 at 2:31 p.m.

I'm not a fan of ecchi comedy shows but I kinda want to at least give this a shot. Mainly because I really like the characters designs and overall look of the series. From the sounds of the comments though I should seek out the manga.

Fanservice, huh? Count me out.
