R.I.P. Nujabes (Feb. 19, 1974-Feb. 26, 2010)

Talented J-hip hop producer Seba Jun killed in tragic Tokyo car accident last month

Last week, March 18, Hydeout Productions released the shocking news that Japanese hip hop producer and DJ Seba Jun, better known by his stage name Nujabes, was killed in an auto accident in Tokyo last month. Anime viewers would likely be familiar with Nujabes' work from the Samurai Champloo soundtrack, which he contributed heavily to, playing a big part in matching the show's music with its hip hop-influenced visual style. While the month long delay in announcing the artist's passing may seem odd to many fans it's entirely consistent with Nujabes' personality, as he was an intensely private individual who shunned fame's spotlight. His service was, obviously, a small, private affair restricted only to friends and family.

Details of the auto accident that killed him are sparse, however, we do know that it happened late at night on an offramp from Tokyo's Shuto Expressway. Honestly, the details of his death don't matter so much as remembering fondly this legend of Japanese hip hop. I, for one, will never forget where I first heard Nujabes' music: a 2007 Winter Solstice party I attended while living in Japan. That went down as one of the best nights of my life and I can attribute a lot of that to his bold beats that made the mood at that bar flow. I highly recommend readers check out his albums Modal Soul and Metaphorical Music--they will astound you.

I'll end this the best way I know how: a bunch of crazy people running in slow-mo through the streets of Tokyo while Nujabes' "Luv pt. 2" plays in the background. Please share any memories you have about Nujabes and his music in the comments below.

I heard about this a few weeks ago, but i never knew about the guy since i never watched Samurai Champloo before. I downloaded all of his music but nothing about it seemed all that interesting to me. Guess it just isn't for me.

Still sorry to hear about him dieing. My condolences go out to his family and friends. I know how painful it is to lose people you care about suddenly and without warning.

@crusader8463: How could you have heard about it weeks ago when it was only announced last Thursday?

Saturday I took a seaside run with all his albums loaded on my mp3 player and had a good sweat/rockout. So bummed out that there won't be any new material form him (other than tracks he left behind, all of which Hydeout is planning to release).

@Mister_Anachronist: First off, i have a lot of free time so days seem like weeks to me. Last Thursday is almost a life time ago for me and my bad memory. I was probably exsageratig on the time, but i read this on some fourm post on giantbomb or on one of the various other sites i frequent some time ago.

I'm sure we're all used to skipping the opening to an anime show, after having seen it a few times.  But when I watched Samurai Champloo on DVD I would always let the opening play through.  The music, and how perfectly it fit with the images, never got old.  I`m apparently not the only one who thinks so, since I just pulled up the Samurai Champloo opening and notice that it has nearly 1.5 million views.

@Arjuna: I feel the same way about Yoko Kanno's opening for Cowboy Bebop: it's a timeless piece of work that pushed forward what it meant to produce opening credits. Thanks for posting that.
