[RETRACTED] Zetsubou Scores an English Dub?!

I'm imagining Chris from Family Guy: "WHAaaaaaaaAAAAT?"

UPDATE: This news has has been retracted based on further information from Media Blasters. You can read the retraction here.

To many (including myself!), Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei was thought of as "undubbable." With fast-and-furious dialogue filled with TONS of references, many more obscure cultural references than even a hardcore western otaku might pick up on, most people figured that Zetsubou would see one of the increasingly popular subtitle-only releases, especially once rumor hit that Media Blasters would be licensing it.

But AICN Anime reports on the copy text in the solicitations (which I have not yet seen myself), and says that an English dub is listed for the show, which is a bigger surprise to me than the license itself. This may also explain the staggered release instead of a box set.

Now, you guys know that I'm generally a subaholic, but that I like to think I'm not a sub-elitist (I totally dug the Big Windup! dub, for example), but I'm a little skeptical of a dub of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. If it can be done really well it'll be awesome, but I'm just not confident that it can.

On the other hand, there are LOTS of shots within Zetsubou Sensei where the character's mouth isn't shown on screen, so maybe it'll prove more doable than I expect.

Potential for fail is high, but it could be extremely good.

I have a feeling it will be either really good or really bad, no middle ground.

If I buy it, I'll just watch it in Japanese.  It won't affect my purchase.
I'm not typically a sub elitist either, but in this case....
An English dub has never been a boost to push me toward a purchase, because I am perfectly fine reading the subtitles.  I've enjoyed several English dubs (like Cowboy Bebop, Ouran  High School, Beck), but it's no loss to me if there isn't one.

I too am not at all confident it can be pulled off, without completely bastardizing the dialog, and Americanizing it in a bad way.

I mentioned in the initial announcement thread, that I don't think an English dub will make it appeal to a larger target audience than it would otherwise.  It's so full of obscure otaku references, and plays off of so many little things, that I can't imagine any sort of casual fan would buy it...and that's typically the reason for ensuring there's an English dub - to attract a wider audience.  Unless, as I said, they plan on Americanizing everything in the English dialog...which would mean I would never ever watch the dub.

Chris B. reports no dub.
So someone's wrong.

I agree with DJTyran it could fail but it could also turn out grate. The closes example of this that I have seen of  a sires that has  "  fast-and-furious dialogue filled with TONS of references" is Pani Poni Dash. It's a sires that has an excellent Dub that is similar the SZS including both being done by Shaft and the director Akiyuki Shinbo.

If Queen's Blade is good enough for a dub, then surely SZS would be, too. Eh. I'd still buy it even if it were a subtitle-only release, so..."no difference".

I'm in despair.

I'll probably stick to the subtitles, but I'd buy it either way.

@omo: That's not the only difference I've been seeing-- I'll have to get back on this.
Zeouterlimitson Feb. 18, 2010 at 4:25 p.m.
I'd watch it with subtitles, but won't say no to having a "good" dub on the disk.
metalsnakezeroon Feb. 18, 2010 at 4:32 p.m.
I'll buy SZS regardless of a dub but now I'm interested in how well they will do the dub with all of those crazy references. Even if it'll be bad It'll be good since it'll be "So bad its good" in my books.
