Required Reading (A Day Late) 01/18/09

A weekly collection of the best reads for otaku on the 'net.

I know, I know, I'm a little late because of going skiing yesterday...sorry! I've been doing my best to make up for it! And in the meantime, better late than never, right? So here's this week's best reading for otaku:

The blog Warren Peace has an interesting article in which a comics/manga fan (Matthew Brady) talks about Osamu Tezuka's Black Jack with his brother Noah, who isn't especially into manga. It's always interesting for me to read something like this that comes from such a different perspective to my own, especially since Noah liked the book, so I thought you might enjoy it too.

MangaCast's Ed continues with his 2008 manga publisher report cards with Bandai Entertainment, who have a tiny output (primarily because they only publish manga that are attached to the anime series they produce) and are given extremely low grades. Do you think he's being too harsh, or is he being fair?

Now, this is really cool: everyone knows of Katsuhiro Otomo for doing Akira, even if they haven't read it themselves. But what about Otomo's pre-Akira work? Consequential Art has some pages from one such work, albeit in Japanese-- but definitely well worth a look. Note that it's rather graphically violent.

Ghost Hound

Sci Fi Japan has interviews with the cast and crew of the upcoming live-action 20 Century Boys film, which looks incredibly awesome.

Speaking of interviews, Production I.G has translated an interview with Junichi Fujisaku and Chiaki J. Konaka, who are the series composers for Real Drive and Ghost Hound, respectively. Here's part one, and here's part two.

Last but not least, over at Japanato omo talks about the voice acting industry in Japan-- definitely a must-read for anime fans who follow seiyuu, and for those who are curious about the differences between voice acting in America and Japan.

That might keep you busy for a few!

Dig Deeper into Osamu Tezuka

Known as the "godfather of manga," Osamu Tezuka is Japan's most prolific manga creator to date with over 700 original series to his name. Tezuka is widely credited for pushing the medium to its mainstream popularity after World War II.
