Rent Anime on YouTube from FUNi, Anime Network

But will users go for it?

I have yet to hear any word on FUNimation or VIZ (or any other anime companies) jumping in on Hulu's new monthly subscription brigade-- but both FUNi and The Anime Network have started renting some anime episodes on YouTube.

FUNi swears that they'll still have plenty of content for free, and their episodes are $0.99. TheAnimeNetwork still has a lot of their own content up for free on YouTube as well as their own player, and individual episodes are rentable for $1.99.

Hmmm, on the one hand, I'm glad to see companies find new ways to potentially monetize stuff (because it means they can bring more over)-- on the other hand, people are so used to getting stuff for free on YouTube, so I don't know how much they'll jump on these rentals. I could see it a lot more for a movie instead of a whole series, too.

What do you think? Will you rent, say, a couple of episodes of Spice and Wolf from FUNi or Legends of the Dark King ~ Fist of the North Star from Anime Network?

I perfer to buy the anime... rather than rent it!

So I'll pass!

This is not appealing to me at all.  I would rather pay a monthly subscription then renting a 22 min. episode for $1 or $2.

No thanks.

Yeah, certainly not interested in this.

People would much rather do monthly fees for things. Sort of reminds me of what a bad idea is was back when dial-up was paid by use.

They are just showing the same stuff that I can get on DVD. I'd much rather just buy it.

If I do happen to want to rent something, then I'd just rather rent it from Netflix.

Part of it is a good idea and part of it is not. This really encourage people to buy the DVD instead if renting it which I did myself.

I`ma keep buying box sets....

I will give it a try.  At this time I do not have Netflix and I do not have the room to buy more DVDs or sets so I will definitely give it a try.  I specially likes Funimations price point.

I'd rather buy than rent anything and if fans really want to watch it for free there are way better ways than Youtube.

If Funi wanted to adopt Crunchyroll's subscription fee model, I might consider it. But I'd rather spend a little more and get the DVDs than rent a series at $1 per episode.

Unless there is an online Anime database that includes ALL the new shows and the vast majority of the older shows viewable for a monthly subscription fee, I will pass and buy the shows I actually want on Blu-Ray in boxed sets.  Anything else is a complete waste of money.

I buy my anime for 2 bucks an episode on X-box 360 marketplace, but the differents here is that I get to keep the episode and not rent it.
wwfunderakeron Jan. 28, 2010 at 1:40 a.m.
Too expensive, especially if you watch a 24-26 episode anime and would be worse if you watch more than that.
Juuhachion Jan. 28, 2010 at 2:28 a.m.
Great, we can't see them at all considering it's all blocked for us, so if we have to pay (for stuff not even licensed in our country yet XD), they have too :3

I'm already tied down with netflix as far as renting goes, so Funi's already getting my money slowly.
John_Martoneon Jan. 28, 2010 at 1:37 p.m.
Digitally renting is just not a concept I can get  behind. Like, I get renting, but until I see rentals start being 5-10 cents instead of a dollar or two, I'm going to be abstaining. As people said, the monthly subscription model, while not perfect, motivates as it gives options for a period.

@Djm:
Do you know how that works? Do the companies behind the dvd's you rent get some sort of kickback?
@Juuhachi:
Where are you from?
Juuhachion Jan. 28, 2010 at 4:15 p.m.
@John_Martone: The Netherlands. We don't have any Dutch fansubs here, so we always watch the English ones. That's why it's quite annoying when companies like FUNimation make their own channel with english subbed anime but ban countries like us. We barely have any releases here, so it sucks. When I wanna buy anime, I'll have to import from the UK or the US.
Djmon Jan. 28, 2010 at 5:14 p.m.
@John_Martone: I'm 99.9999999 percent certain that the companies do get some kind of kickback from the rentals from netflix.  I'd be shocked if they didn't.  The subscription service really depends on how many DVDs you plan to go through at any given time.  I'd almost say that I go through 20-30 DVDs a month, mostly anime, and that's WELL under a dollar a DVD.

I love it.  I've never been totally attached to the whole "having it in my hands" philosophy like a lot of otaku, so for me, netflix is ideal.

I'll stick to my piracy good sir!
jlanzeron Feb. 2, 2010 at 1:17 a.m.
my problem with certain streaming sites like netflix with watching anime is the lack of japanese voice options.  It has been a few months since I've seen an anime on netflix so I don't know if this is a current problem.  But if I can't watch the anime with its original voice acting I'm not willing to pay a premium on a sub par product assuming the youtube rentals would all be engrish dubbed.
