Rapid-Fire Second Dates: Fall 2009 Anime

Let's take a quick look back, shall we?

As a follow-up to all the various first dates of the season, I thought I'd go through and do a very brief follow-up on each of the shows I reviewed, for those of you who are curious as to which series progressed beyond the first ep and which didn't. Note that these are still only based on two episodes, so they're not end-all final reviews by any stretch-- but two episodes doubles the amount of content I can use to judge shows on!

11eyes - First Date - The second episode featured some iffy pacing, and I don't care how torn up Yuka's skirt is-- she's still pretty annoying and snivelly. The new villainess looks kinda cool though, and Kusakabe as well. In fact, the whole host of villains has strong design-- stronger than the girls of the show, which is interesting for a moe show. Whenever they get pulled back to the real world I feel kinda ripped off. Oh, the generic guy friend side character is annoying too.

Book of Bantorra - First Date - We've finally seen why Hamuts Meseta is such a badass, but the story is moving forward rather slowly. As such, I'm still a bit torn on whether it'll be as good as it looks-- but visually, it's still a very strong show, at least.

Fairy Tail - First Date - More Fairy-style fun, Lucy has officially entered the Fairy Tail guild and goes on her first official adventure with Natsu, and for the time being it still follows the manga completely. Currently we're meeting other characters and learning some backstory, which is fun...but I'm aching for some Erza.

InuYasha: The Final Act - First Date - The crazy pace has slowed down, but only a bit, so think of it as classic InuYasha, but on speed. I mean, in two episodes we've had two significant character deaths (zomg spoiler!), which is amazing speed by InuYasha standards.

Miracle Train - First Date - It was with a slight cringe that I hit play on the second episode of this show, but at least I learned about monja (or monjayaki, kinda like okonimyaki but with a slightly more liquid dough). I wonder if they'll go through the scene every episode where the girl they're supposed to help is confused but readily entirely too accepting of meeting a bunch of personified train stations? Where's the girl who flips out thinking she's about to be raped by a bunch of pretty boys? Come on!

Sasameki Koto - First Date - I've heard some middling reviews, but I'm totally excited for the delicious trap. Sumi-chan continues to remind me of Yomi from Azumanga Daioh, which is also a good thing. Now, can Kazuma grow as a character?...

Sora no Otoshimono - First Date - You know, the opening of this thing makes me think of a pervy version of the Muppet Babies, with all the little fantasies they go through at one point. Anyway, in the second episode, you learn why the ending sequence features flying panties. Watch it here! I will say the subs didn't seem as closely QA'd as the first episode's, however.

Tegami Bachi - First Date - More beautiful designs as we get through the set-up that will take us to the full story. Probably my favorite for this season at the moment, and almost certainly the best-looking show airing right now.

Oh, man-- I must be tired not to have thought of that one! Especially with my experiences at anime speed dating at Matsuri last year :)
