Quickie: New Yamato Trailer is Online!

Oohhh, shiny!

I don't know how many of you remember that at the Tokyo Anime Fair, a new Space Cruiser Yamato anime project was confirmed for 2009. I just got a tip from a friend leading me to the trailer for the project-- a 9-minute trailer, even. It's on YouTube, so I've replicated it right here for you.

A little literal on the “space opera” idea at first, but it looks damn shiny, don't you think? I was too busy drooling over all the CG to really pick up on much of the Japanese (aside from a black hole and preparing to launch a ship), but the Yamato looks better than ever.

I never really got to watch much of the original Starblazers stuff, but I'm definitely looking forward to the new project, which I'm guessing based on this footage is a movie or an OVA-- it looks a little too high-budget to be a TV season.

It does sound like they've included the original music, though! Any fans of the original able to shed any more light on the trailer?

Not a big fan of mid-budget CG myself.

The story of the origional if I recall my childhood was more about the Yamato going to Iscandar to get a cure for the people of Earth and only having a short amount of time to do it. On the way they had to fight the bad guys who were trying to stop them. Each ep would feature it's own blazing sword in the form of the giant laser cannon firing and or they hyperspace leap.

This doesn't look anything like that story.

Dig Deeper into Space Cruiser Yamato

Aliens are raining bombs down onto the earth, forcing humans to live underground-- but radioactivity is seeping into the ground, too. But hope is found in the form of an old Japanese battleship called Yamato and plans for a faster-than-light engine.
