Quickie: Adult Swim to Start Earlier in 2011

The top-branded TV block among 18-24 year old dudes expands.

Word at MediaWatch (via ToonZone) is that Adult Swim is going to start running at 9pm EST instead of 10pm EST starting in January 2011-- a move that will probably mean more original programming and/or Family Guy reruns, but hey, we could always fantasize that it'll mean another hour of anime here and there.

Actually, I'm just gonna throw this out there: I think Durarara!! would be a pretty good fit for Adult Swim. The badass tone fits right in, and the overall semi-supernatural, semi-human drama story should be interesting to anyone. Also, the first six episodes (at least) are relatively standalone, meaning the show would have some time to draw in random viewers before diving into a bigger story arc.

What do you think? Are there any recent anime series you think would do well on Adult Swim?

It starts at 11 pm est right now, doesn't it?  Except on Sunday's maybe.
lanaswifton Feb. 16, 2010 at 12:10 p.m.
@Kris: it changed from 11 to 10 last year.

P.S. I thought Soul Eater was the rumored next big anime on Adult Swim. Did I miss a memo?
DocHauson Feb. 16, 2010 at 12:11 p.m.
Durarara!! is a cool idea, but I think Baccano! would be even better, considering [adult swim]'s audience would be able to identify better with the setting. While they're at it, they should totally try to grab Darker than Black and its sequel.  If they premiered any of these, with English-dubbed voices, I would watch it.

I'm still thinking that they'll just fill it up with old episodes of British comedy shows and long-running anime derived from stuff they've already shown (see: Dragon Ball Kai and FMA: Brotherhood ). Anything "original" will be mostly limited to getting a five year old to scribble with crayons on construction paper, paying Dana Snyder to do a funny voice, and call it a show.

I know of six shows and a movie I would like to be on Adult Swim, but don't have a chance in heck of happening. Sasameki Koto, Aoi Hana, Revolutionary Girl Utena and Hanamaru Kindergarten, Rose Of Versailles and Peach Girl.  For the movie I would like to be on Adult Swim is Patlabor 2: The Movie.

Most likely something like Drgonaut will make the Adult Swim line-up.  Want to cry in corner right now. :(
lanaswifton Feb. 16, 2010 at 12:31 p.m.
@DocHaus: On the other hand, the "exoticness" of Shinjuku might be more interesting to the audience than the more familiar setting of Baccano.

@N15PCA: Oh, ugh. No, I don't think it'll be Dragonaut.

Adult Swim isn't being smart about what anime they should put up. Besides FMA:BH they should add other shows like that like Baccano!, Darker than Black and more.
lanaswifton Feb. 16, 2010 at 3:44 p.m.
@metalsnakezero: DtB is a good one, I could see it fitting into [as] pretty easily.
DocHauson Feb. 16, 2010 at 6:48 p.m.
First of all, DRRR!! is set in Ikebukuro. Second, I agree with you, but TV execs tend to go towards safer bets than "exotic" ones. This is the main reason they've been showing reruns of Family Guy, King of the Hill and The Office (UK) instead of anime or much else in the way of new cartoons on Adult Swim.

Maybe this new timeslot will give anime some room. I doubt it but I really don't mind AS right now anyway. ATHF and Metalocalypse are 2 of my favorite shows on TV. I could do without the Family Guy reruns though.

That's awesome that it will start an hour earlier now.  Hopefully they will show more anime, even though probably wont.   :(

@DocHaus: I think that's my fault-- I said Shinjuku in some other post about Durarararararara. That said, I dunno...what about when they showed FLCL? It seems like an obvious bet now, but at the time I bet it wasn't so clear-cut.

Oh sweet... wait, 2011.

It hurts to have such high hopes.
