Quick Picks for 2/22/11

There is a lot of great stuff that came out this week, so I will try and mention all the highlights. This week, Yen Press became the pivotal company to resort to for new manga. A new volume of the popular franchise about the students at Death Weapon Meister Academy has been released. That is right, Soul Eater volume 5 is out for your reading pleasure.

The eleventh installment of the Higurashi When They Crystories continue this week in an all new arc called Eye Opening. If you are a fan of this franchise then I suggest you go get this first new volume to find out how Mion and Shion deal with a year of boarding school behind them. 
There is a non-Yen Press release that sticks out like a cute and furry, sore thumb. Vertical, Inc. released the fifth volume of Chi's Sweet Home, the book about the most adorable cat in all of anime and manga.

The anime highlight of the week is FUNimation's release of FLCL. This six episode anime is about Naota, a "detached sixth grader afflicted by the pangs of puberty". Naota's story takes a strange turn when a crazed girl in a motor scooter runs him over while he's fooling around with his brother's ex-girlfriend. The crazed girl bangs him on the head with a bass guitar and moves into his house claiming she's an alien. Oh wait, it get's weirder when Naota gets stuck in the middle of a secret agenda set by a mega-corporation and a giant battling robots shoot out of his head when he has naughty thoughts. Did I mention that he needs to be "pooped" out of the robots to be back to his old self? I think there is no adjective that could easily describe how idiosyncratic this anime is.

Definitely getting FLCL at some point. Would have gotten it on RightStuf during the last FUNi sale but I hate pre-orders (personal habit of getting things now, not later!). On the manga side, I've been curious about the Soul Eater manga as I liked the anime and I'm also curious about Sumomomo Momomo. I've become a big fan of Yen Press' titles if you can't tell from my blogs and such. lol
