Quick Picks 01/19/10

Geekachu challenges Gia to pick more unsung titles from this week's release list!

This week Geekachu challenged me to do something a little different with Quick Picks. Instead of just picking what I'd say are the outright best buys-- names you've seen me go on about many times, like Pluto and Black Jack --we tried to stick with slightly more off-beat titles.

But you should definitely still check out the release list, because quite a few really fantastic books came out that Geekachu wouldn't let me talk about! I've italicized some of them, as well as bolding the ones mentioned in the video. The only problem is now almost everything is either bolded or italicized...

So, where will your money go this week? Aside from the obvious (Pluto, Black Jack), I'm really thinking about picking up The Book of Heroes-- it's by Miyuki Miyabe, who also wrote Brave Story. I bet John wants to pick up Special A collection 2, also. And I keep meaning to grab ALL the Oishinbo books...so a trip to the bookstore is definitely in order.

@danielm: It's the product of an "if you want it done right, do it yourself" mindset ;) I find a lot of other release lists are incomplete or inaccurate...granted, it's hard to put together a 100% accurate list even just the day before the stuff comes out, but even when QP was coming out later in the week I constantly found all sorts of errors in Amazon listings, official company website release calendars, etc. @_@

I think you need to kill off geekachu, its just not working anymore

I'd like Geekachu more if it didn't have an Ana-like arm attached to it.

Think I'll check out King of RPGs ... it'll be like reading my own autobiography.

Man, that's like, my second favorite part.

As I can safely say this, since I'm not involved with this video series in the slightest, I still dig Geekachu. Knowing that Ana records and performs, plus the cheesy dialog helps keep this featuring humming for me. I mean, 3Min Expert is Gia versus the audience, Straight Up News is the same way, here she has someone to talk to things about and it works for me.

Well, al the VIZ titles can be avoided completely. As far as anime goes, unless the DVD has both English and Subs it too can be avoided. It's a little sad too since the dub actors did a pretty good job on the series.  I see they have their Pseudo-Detective Conan series at 33 Volumes. That's 33 volumes of doing something poorly.

This is how Detective Conan should be:
(Remember that Conan and Haibara are actually seventeen and eighteen years old and in this class.)

It can be pretty informative about Japanese culture if VIZ didn't dumb the series down. I find it suspicious that on one of the most informative series into Japanese culture they remove as much Japanese culture as possible. Even more so when you consider how much the culture has to do with the solution to many of the cases.

Scene from Episode 517 - Furinkazan's Shadow Case
(The voice actress for Kallen and Holo, Koshimizu Ami, is in this episode as Uehara Yui. She becomes a reoccurring character in the series.)

Now, Del Rey is a good publisher.

I like Geekachu just how things are, by the way.

@gia: Yeah. When I try to highlight manga releases on our Weekly Comic Picks at Bureau42 (which I must admit I don't do very often), I'm semi-limited to stuff being distributed by Diamond, which runs into its own problems, because Diamond has some holes in their manga lists. For example, they don't carry Bastard.

Okay, so as someone who just started reading pluto last night, wow, it does deserve to get talked about all of the time.
