Quick Picks 01/07/10

The first Quick Picks of 2010: with tons of hentai!

Seriously, who declared it hentai DVD release week without consulting me? That was rude. There's a lot of hentai out this week (50% of the anime releases I found were smut), which is awesome, but I wasn't allowed to focus on them :( But that's okay, because there was a lot of other good stuff this week, mostly manga. One Piece speedup, anyone?

You can hardly compare a comedy series like Shin-chan with a murder mystery series like Detective Conan. You try and point out when alterations are done in a comedy series in some attempt to make an excuse for the utter misrepresentation and destruction of a very entertaining narrative. I'm not against any and all localization. The Shin-chan alterations don't hurt the story. That's the line.

The changes in Pokemon had no appreciative effect on the story. VIZ targeted a 'murder' mystery series that shows graphic and violent deaths to a youth audience. I believe the only crimes they don't cover are sex crimes. Is it responsible of them to target such a young audience with such a violent series? They don't alter the art from the things I have seen. After the first two volumes they should of noticed the mistake and fixed it, but they kept going. Oh, I checked. They are thirty volumes in now. It's as if someone saw that the lead character looks like a grade school kid and thought it would be a good idea to try and target that reading audience without even looking into what happens in the series.

I haven't been able to confirm this myself, but I've been hearing that in more recent Naruto volumes they aren't using the English translations of the jutsu names the way they used to do in the earliest volumes. In that series they seem to be moving more toward the internet audience. Look how they are trying to catch up in Naruto and One Piece with the Japanese publications. By this summer One Piece in the US will only be a couple volumes behind Japan. Why take that move if they aren't trying to target what you called the niche market?

I really wouldn't be so hard on the publisher if I felt that there was any real hope that they would ever correct the damage they have done to the story of Detective Conan. I can even stomach that Case Closed title change. That has no effect on the story in the book. I mean, has there ever been a reason why the series is called Bleach? I have not seen any news or heard even the hint that they were even considering it. If they did then I might still buy other VIZ mangas and support the series they do right. With this series they show no sign of any hope.
The names in Detective Conan are no more complicated then those from Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece.

It's not as if it is just in one series There are the silly alterations to One Piece. The military of that world is called the Marines. It's on pretty much all their hats, clothes and printed in large capital letters on the sails of all their ships. MARINE in English, but in the VIZ translation they always say "Navy". How does that make any sense that you have everyone saying "Navy" but everyone is wearing clothes that say "Marine". They are contradicting what is clearly seen on the page.
This is pretty minor since it has little if any effect to the story. It's just confusing why what is said and seen are two different things.

Detective Conan is my favorite manga series of all. It was following it online that encouraged me to want to learn to read and write Japanese. So often the cases involved kanji and the meaning in Japanese. That's why it's so confusing why they remove so much of the Japanese from the story when the case solutions often depend on it. The way they are now. I wont give VIZ a dime and I will encourage whoever I can to do the same. I'm not completely dead set against them. I could hear tomorrow some news about changes and I would be excited. I just seriously doubt that will ever happen.

@FoxxFireArt: Not completely dead set against them in spite of calling them "worthless slime"? Come on now ;)

Well, that's more just being reactionary. Seriously though. I see no hope for them what so ever from their own actions. Could they change? Certainly. Is it likely they will? No.

They seem willing to cater to the online audience with Naruto and Bleach fans, but Detective Conan gets nothing. There is no justification for the alterations they make and continue to make. Not when fixing the damage is as simple as changing text.

What bothers me the most is the lack of the options they offer. For an example, let's say that VIZ had an online manga site where I could read Detective Conan with the proper names. Either a reasonable subscription or put up with as many ads as they felt was needed. Much in the way of iTunes. Even better, the option to purchase an "uncut version" of the manga online. Even Marvel now has comics online.
