PSYCHO-PASS #1 - - Special Review

MINORITY REPORT meets CLOCKWORK ORANGE? Hey, I like those movies.

Kudos to Marshal Victory for recommending this series. To be honest, I briefly considered watching it whilst scouring through Hulu’s anime collection, but the goofy promo image turned me off. Well, “turned off” maybe is too strong language. It just seemed like there wasn’t anything to the series beyond future cops with Lazer Tag guns.

Vergilius’ note about this being from the same writer as MADOKA MAGICA tipped the scale some, as well. Who knows if we’ll be seeing an authorial voice connecting these shows, but the prospect's good enough for me. Even if I generally can’t sustain watching a simulcast show every week, it’s nice to try every so often.

Honestly, I wasn’t won over until the “MINORITY REPORT meets A CLOCKWORK ORANGE” elevator pitch was thrown at me. As somebody who was a remedial reader in 2nd Grade and quite nearly put on Ritalin, I’ve usually got a greater, personal interest in futuristic sci-fi about the government trying to pre-emptively regulate human nature under the guise of social reform. And if I can get some cool gunplay with it, then all the better…

Anyway - - the show’s got an intriguing hook, even if it breathlessly frontloads an excess of exposition to get its premise across. It’s almost like Urobuchi felt a desperate necessity to convey all the complexity of this concept in the first go for fear that viewers wouldn’t stick around otherwise. For the most part, it didn’t irk me too much - - but the show does still suffer a telltale storytelling crutch by having its rookie protagonist get a bunch of explanations on the field that she logically should’ve been briefed on before she ever set foot outside of the department.

The finisher with our rookie potentially fallen to this “virus of violence,” as it were, is a decent tease. Not the most gripping cliffhanger, but interesting enough. I think I’ll go on and see if there’s more to this series than morphing Lazer Tag guns that can only shoot those guilty of unclean thinking.

Watch this episode, "Crime Coefficient" here and decide for yourself.

It's also a bit of Judge Dredd, with the Dominators.

It's not a bad show. Reminds me a lot of the Ghost in the Shell anime, which is not a bad thing really. It is definitely interesting. My only complaint is that it gets a little too chatty at times.

Marshal Victoryon Dec. 10, 2012 at 11:09 a.m.

My original pitch was

" it showcases the "perfect big goverment " an its not perfect. In many respects this show may well be way more political than the creators intended. You just dont have gun control. You have life control. You become a criminal just by having to many "bad" thoughts."

Thats just the background .You have way more runing in the forground .Series feels like it has more depth even yet.But hate to think it does an be disapointed. So far seen 9 shows an not a dud among them.Few surprises even for the jaded tv watcher in me.

It seems to have bigger themes going on difrent levels to with out slowing down the plot pace.Be it slavery ,rape, gun control, political corectness, even shows how bad "group think" can be an what results.Thing is it does not show it all as a dirty distant future its layered with plastic flowers an fake smiles.

As show goes on i would be shocked if Tom Pinchuk has little to say about it.Should be red meat for the writer in ya me thinks.Tho i do wonder when your profile will stop with 404 error ?

I found it interesting that so many flaws were pointed out with the technology in the gun in just the first episode. Makes me wonder if this technology was QA tested before coming to market.

The gun limiters also serve as a useful plot device to hold back the detectives at "dire" moments. A pretty easy plot device if you ask me.

Oh man, you're going to love it when the Nineteen Eighty-Four undertones start becoming more prominent.

Aleashaon Dec. 11, 2012 at 11:13 a.m.

I have been keeping up with this series and while after the first episode I wasn't sure if I would like it now 9 episodes in I enjoy it a lot the tease of the imperfect system and all its faults. As the characters develop which is slow in some cases you can see the deeper possibilities for the future of the these characters. I would suggest this series to anyone who enjoys this genre I think on a lot of levels anime and manga fall through the cracks with bad promotional work.

Marshal Victoryon Dec. 11, 2012 at 3:01 p.m.

@Aleasha: I agree . If they do not have a second season id hunt the [promotnal department down cause its not the shows fault in the slightest.

@Lurkero: Gun i thought was a intresting plot device .Also note the inspectors/handlers basicly at any time could kill a hound. Also note the general populace has no weapons.
