Profile Through Pictures: Prince Dios/Akio Ohtori

There is this concept of a character. A Prince, whose beauty, grace, and power are revolutionary... that is to say they have the power revolutionize the world. As we talked about earlier, the Prince came to Utena as a child, and motivated her to move forward with her life; instilled in her the want to become a Prince. Of course, this is interesting because at the same time, by nature of his loveliness, Utena also wanted to become his Princess.

This is not unsurprising. While I won't go further into the legend of the Prince, needless to say he was pretty much so loved it hurt. While his "actual" appearances may be few, Utena, in her moments of transcendence, "looks" like the prince, embodying his traits. Of course, this article isn't meant to be about Prince Dios, but rather... about Akio Ohtori, but those issues are a bit muddy.

Brother to Anthy, Akio is the acting chair of Ohtori Academy, and bears a striking resemblence to the Prince. Using this to his advantage, he even manages to deftly seduce Utena, similar to how he has manipulated and seduced so many before her. While Dios is a being of pure selfless love, Akio seems only motivated by self gain, and shows no concern or love for anyone other than himself. Though, for what its worth, he shows both cruelty and dependance on his sister, whom he keeps in his sexual thrall.

And yes. The fact that there is a chart of oral sex height should tell you something about Akio's character.

I think a lot of girls can relate to the dual instincts to become strong and self-sufficient (a prince) and to be lovely and cared for (a princess).

...Or maybe that's just me?

@gia:

that dual desire also explains part of the appeal of yaoi, as the audience will find themselves drawn to the seme, the uke, or both -- or with first one and then the other, or even changing one's mind between one reading and the next -- as the lack of defined roles (they're all hot guys) takes the Prince vs Princess debate, lubes it up and then shoves it... right out the window.

 (replace yoai with yuri and throw in a healthy dose of loser fanboy and you'll know why I'm really groovin' on Aoihana over on crunchyroll right now -- but that's beside the point)

Utena does much the same thing, but all within one character:  depending on which character she's paired with, and how far the plot has developed (and what the twist in a particular episode is) Utena is savior, sister, lover, friend, rival -- object of desire, admiration, envy, contempt, or even love.  She's a complex character, emotionally, but is always true to her heart -- even when her heart would lead her astray.  Of course we love her.

@rocketbomber: Oh, I absolutely agree; one of yaoi's biggest draws is the ability to relate to either person in the relationship. I think it's also that you can feature a lot of things-- like coersion or out-and-out-rape --in a titilating manner without feeling like you're condoning such actions in reality, since yaoi is such a fantasy by its nature (generally speaking-- there are always those stand-out exceptions).
