Honestly? I loved the first few seasons until I kinda got bored with said repetitiveness.

I feel like the Pokemon anime has always just been a big advertisement. All of the big weekend morning cartoons, Pokemon, One Piece, PreCure and things like Super Sentai/Power Rangers are just there to remind kids and their parents that the games, manga, merch and such exists.
I remember the developers saying the games are always so similar because they're made for every new batch of kids getting into the franchise. The anime always resets because its doing the same thing. It's always simple plots so kids can just jump in and out at anytime.

The Adventures manga is for older kids, and has more of a plot than the show. The creator of pokemon said it best fit the world he originally wanted to convey. It's still fairly simple but gets serious at points.
Didn't get suckered into the merch too much when I was a kid. But I have a Pokemon Monopoly board.

As an anime, I think Digimon is far and away better in almost every category. The Pokemon games are better, though I'm saying that as someone who's never played a Digimon game.

    Destinyheroknighton April 4, 2013 at 4:20 p.m.

I say Pokemon does deserves respect, it one of the reasons why people got into anime (who didn't have cable). But I wish the Pokemon anime would have gone the route of Digimon and Pokemon Adventures, that focus more on the people then the monsters and have better a story

    POKEMON Deserves Respect?

er... any thing or one of value earns respect. To say deserve is to ask for given respect .Which recived will mean nothing.

Pokemon is tricky because its point of view for any respect.Odd thing is hard core pokemon fans dont see a comparison to say my little pony, gi joe or teenage mutant ninja turtales even.

As a collectable card game it was pretty decent. Not quite Magic the Gathering but it was fun for bit.

As a anime is was at times ok.

As a world wide marketing device it was epic.

I think Sam is right to cal it shonen .But few see it as such.Plus some can make the case pokemon has hurt anime overal all perseption as a infinate money sink.Which to be fair any hobby is.

I like how Tom puts Pokémon somewhere between My Little Pony and hentai, which is... probably a lot more accurate than I'd like to admit...

Just for the record, Pokémon is waaaaay beyond 400 episodes. The 777th episode of Pokémon aired in Japan today, and that's not including the spin-off series Pokémon Chronicles, which brings the episode count roughly up to 800. Before anyone judges me (and shame on you for doing so, by the way) I did have to look those figures up, I didn't just know them off the top of my head. The anime has been able to go on for so long because, while there is an ongoing continuity following Ash Ketchum on his adventures, each Pokémon series (Pokémon, Pokémon Advanced Generation, Pokémon Diamond & Pearl, etc.) is largely left-contained. That's also the biggest problem. At the beginning of each new series (which tie-in with a new set of video games) the show is basically reset. Ash sends all of his Pokémon away except Pikachu, starts a journey in a new region to defeat all of its Gym Leaders and enter that regions Pokémon League, makes new friends, and basically becomes a rookie again.

Still, it's a system that works and will likely continue to work as long as the games are popular in Japan. From what I understand, the Pokémon games seem to break sales records every time a new set are released, so I don't think Pokémon will be going anywhere any time soon.

Where does it sit on the Rock or Suck scale? ...it depends what era of Pokémon we're talking about. The original series is the best, not just because it's what I grew up with but because that had actual character development and story progression, at least within the boundaries of a kid's anime. Once you go beyond the original series, the real repetition and "resets" begin. Still, it warms my heart to know it's still trucking along, and part of me hopes it never stops.

Oh, I should point out that I did start watching the newest series, Pokémon Black & White, a while ago but haven't checked in with it in a while. While they did reset everything again, they changed some things up that made it interesting like turning the Team Rocket Trio into competent criminals with their own side-story. Although part of the appeal of that is watching it in Japanese with fan subs. Naughty, I know.

Actually, you know what? Pokémon does deserve more recognition, because then maybe Crunchyroll would run a simulcast for us older fans and that would be amazing.

    Donwunon April 4, 2013 at 5:13 p.m.

I had alot of fun with Pokemon when i was a tween but over time it became too repetitive, plotless and never-ending.

To me, It's really just a childrens show you eventually grow out of

My 5 yo' nephew loves it and i can appreciate that it is a great anime for kids teaching all the good family value stuff like friendship, responsibility, keeping your pets in balls being good for them, you know the good stuff :oP

Pokemon's got my respect, mostly for nostalgia but lets be honest it earns so much money it really does'nt need respect - it just needs more children to continue its own fanbase / business and i don't hate it for that cuz it works just fine on that level

Well i'm the example of someone who has gotten into anime because of pokemon..yep it was my introductory anime and i still have a big book of cards that i cant seem to get rid of lol...i figure ill pass them down like an ancient ritual or something..anyway

does it deserve respect???...hmm err somewhat. pokemon did emerse me into their world. when i was in grade school it was the talk of the town. EVERY kidd had pokemon cards and the video games. pokemon opened my brain though to alot of different anime shows because of the depth it gave the first arc or saga or whatever..

of course my brother had gotten into anime around the same time and was a bit older so he bought anime for older audiences. exposing my brain to the likes of Ninja scrolls, dbz, andolder anime movies.

BUT just like everyones problem i cant stand the resets..it almost defeats the purpose of the previous arcs..wait it actually does..i mean if he really want to be the best..why keep resetting and being a rookie again??

In all honesty ash should be about 25 with three kids...This show has stretched out to its core..but hey as long as people dig it why not make more??

To me, Pokemon got progressively worse with each season..I stopped watching after Johto League Champions I think.

Well, in the grand scheme of things, I do believe that Pokemon deserves some respect. The first few seasons of the anime were awesome back when I was a kid, and it (along with Digimon) got me interested in animated shows and started me on the road towards becoming an anime fan. The card game was fun, the games were great (played every game from Red/Blue/Yellow to Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, including the Pokemon Stadium games, Pokemon Snap, and Hey You, Pikachu!) and the movies (the first three of them) were pretty decent as well.

I think it's hard to call it a "fluke" when it's been going strong for over a decade in movies, tv, and gaming.

    sora_thekey moderator on April 5, 2013 at 5:36 p.m.

Tom, sometimes you're just a pessimist. I'll admit I never watched Pokemon past the 3rd season (No Misty, no watch-y)... but the games still continue to be fun. (Although I think the last one I played es Gold)

Still, respect the Mon genre dude...

......Digimon is better (Sorry, I just had to!)

    Kino88on April 8, 2013 at 6:41 p.m.

at the age of ten I was a massive fan of the show, I still think it's an ok show for kiddies,

and it did help jump start my love for anime and all things otaku related, so yeah Pokemon still has my respect, it was also my generation's cool thing, the kind of sweet pop culture wave that left parents scratching there heads because they could not figure it out. every generation needs that sorta thing, so for that Pokemon still has a place in my heart.

I wouldn't say Pokemon was a fluke. The series is ok when you are 10. The first couple of seasons were the best. The anime is okay in my opinion but the games have always been better. However, I think he anime has gone on too long for my liking. I am not a fan of anime's with hundreds of episodes because they get boing and the get over done. The first or second seasons are always the best in my opinion, then I get high expectations.

However, back to the main point. I don't think it is a fluke. It is pretty decent and has become one of the most known anime's even today. I am just not a fan of Ash that much at all. It does deserve some respect considering it has made something decent out of itself but on the other hand, like I said before, it has been on going too long so that is the let down for me. The games are still pretty good but the anime not so much.

Overall, yes it should have respect but only for the older stuff personally. Just because I don't like the new anime series. The movies are all good but not the series itself.

Nintendo has this thing where if a formula works, keep using it. That's how Pokemon is and some of its video game mascots.

When my older friends found out Pokemon was still ongoing, they were surprised. I remember one of my gal friends said what happened to Misty when we watch Pokemon Black and White at the dorms. Ah good times. I still watch Pokemon because my family is pretty big. The youngest sibling is about 11 years younger than me. Every Saturday morning or so this year at 8:30AM, he will wake me up to watch Pokemon with him.

I don't mind the repetitiveness. 5 years later, I'll see whether my little bro will be interested in Pokemon and other kid cartoons.
