What strange timing. A second serving of PARASYTE this week - - right in time for Thanksgiving?
I swear, I don’t want to keep making comparisons to Spider-Man, but the show’s pretty much made it impossible. Shinichi’s becoming more confident and aggressive during civilian hours - - going so far as to frighten his love interest with his personality shift - - and it’s note-for-note the same sub-plot Peter Parker goes through throughout all iterations of the Symbiote Saga. Considering how this is partly due to Migi insistently whispering into his ear, I’m half-expecting him to start referring to himself as “we.”
Shinichi’s even become quite the chick magnet (which was part of SPIDER-MAN 3’s riff on the saga, natch). To see the hero juggling girls in a show like this is actually rather… unusual. Yes, there are countless harem shows, but this is different. The guy isn’t going into histrionic fits about the mere thought of boobs.
Of course, it’s still anime, so don’t expect this guy’s unleashed Id to spur him into actually, y’know, reciprocating any of these girls’ interest. The show about exploding heads still needs to keep things age-appropriate.
While the sub definitely suffers from the translation team not having enough time to properly… finesse a lot of lines, the intent of these scenes is always pointed. The characterization of Shinichi’s father’s stages of depression has been surprisingly grounded (from denial fantasies to general apathy), and the scene where Shinichi really creeps Homura out with his “ambivalent” attitude about dead puppies had a sharp balance of character development and black humor. I even like how the bully sub-plot has developed beyond its cliché start, so now Shinichi actually has to defend these knuckleheads. And I love the scenes where he shit talks this menacing teen parayste (who I just want to call Eddie Brock).
I just wonder how much longer we’ll be in the suburban high school setting. Honestly, I thought we were done with it once Shinichi’s mother was murdered, but now we’re getting some wish fulfillment in him getting to be the bad boy on campus. Considering how his outbursts are getting more frequent, and the feds are now on the scene, I suppose it won’t be too long before he ventures out into the world permanently?
