PARASYTE - THE MAXIM #13 Features Some Real Idiots

#13 -- Watch & Learn. She doesn't notice!

If “Hello Sadness” isn’t the angst-iest title for an episode ever…

Look, I think the teenage melodrama has been handled well. There’s actually a pretty good explanation underpinning the familiar “talk about your feelings” scene, and the notion that Shinichi’s trying to make himself feel worse about Kana’s death is actually pretty moving. Hell, the swirling motivations actually give a fresh spin to the part where he and Migi argue over the private eye.

Still, these developments really should’ve happened sooner - - as in before the massacre at Shinichi’s high school.

I hate to keep harping on this plot hole, but the show makes it impossible to ignore, having the “norms” repeatedly question Shinichi without drawing the obvious connections. These have to be densest townsfolk in any horror story. Nobody finds it odd that corpses keep piling up in bloody, hacked-up pieces? That isn’t causing a general state of panic? Wouldn’t it have made more sense for the show to build this tension up until the massacre, instead of just having the community shrug it off because… shit happens, I guess?

Murano comes out looking the dumbest of the lot, too. She’s only just now realizing that Shinichi’s a little too weird to be hanging out with? She hasn’t ever found it strange that he rescued her by jumping out of a three-story building and leaping over a ten-foot-tall fence in so many bounds?

While the parasytes probably should’ve been organizing sooner, too, I really dug the couple scenes of their “cabal” in conference. To pile another Marvel superhero comparison on, those parts reminded me of the vampire council scenes in BLADE, and I suppose Shinichi’s a bit like the Daywalker, too. All of these monsters’ strengths, and none of their weaknesses, and such - - always a ripe source of angst.

Watch "Hello Sadness" and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.

Frickin super spoiler pic dude. You should get a one week ban for putting that on the front page.

haha... i hear ya Tom.. agree again but still can't help but find it amusing.. after this ep he really should be saying to himself "going to school is making me easy pickings now" but we all know he'll be back in class tomorrow

I actually stopped reading the manga after realising it's relatively short - i'll be watching and readin the chapters at the same time as the anime to get some interesting observations... so far it's pretty identical believe it or not - it's just the animation is slightly better in this anime version from the illustrations, although Satomi Murano's face always looks like she's exhausted to me in the anime... is it just me.. she just looks weary.. from the very beginning in fact...

lol... oh and it's funny how this kid has gone thru the Aizen / clark kent effect - i prefer the nerdier look as standard tbh

We don't know how long it has taken the parasites to organize. It probably took them as long as any organization would take. They are like any society, and they're not all in it for the same reasons, nor do they all get along like an invading force of soldiers.

Now let's talk about the parasite murders all across the town. So let's say that the town panics. Then what? So what do you want to happen? People move out? People scream and shout "Something crazy's going on!" In reality, how did people react to Son of Sam, the Unibomber, or any other serial killers? Some people were freaked out, or cautious, but people just live how they live, and let the authorities handle it.

I think that things are eventually going to blow up, in a spectacular fashion for Shinichi. He can't be totally exposed, though. Like Migi said, if this really got out, Shinichi would be a lab experiment. I think Migi is the voice of our reality. If this was the real world, with supernatural beings in it, Shinichi would indeed be on an operating table.

Dig Deeper into Parasyte -the maxim-

An normal high-schooler ends up with a parasite named "Migi" on his right arm and it ends up being friends with his host instead of eating him like most other parasites. They end up in a crossfire from the war between humans and parasites, however.
