Overheard on Twitter: Twilight Fans vs Moe Fans

An interesting comparison. What do YOU think?

So even as I type this, a fluffy of discussion is going on via Twitter. It started out with manga blogger Melinda Beasi, who noted that she has the Twilight graphic novel, and is looking forward to seeing if it deserves all the "flack" its received.

TOKYOPOP intern and manga blogger AllAboutManga replied that they wouldn't get as much flack "if they didn't create things like Edward panties or Edward body pillows," and Beasi pointed out-- rather rightly, I should think --that anime and manga geeks can hardly point fingers when it comes to being fans of body pillows and their ilk of product.

At this point TimMaughan, a sci-fi/manga/anime blogger, jumped in, suggesting that "at least some of the Twilight fans admit it's a sex thing, and aren't living in otaku style denial."

I won't go into great detail on the ensuing discussion, some of which is intelligent and interesting and some of which is little more than otaku RAGE!, but I found the comparison interesting. We've certainly talked about moe-- that indefinable mix of cute, needy, and (arguably) sexy --and we've also talked about the female side of fangirling (mostly fujoshi, BL fangirls). But the comparison of Twilight fans, fans of fictional characters who ooze angst, need, and sexual attraction while maintaining a stance of chastity (at least as I understand the first novel), to moe fans, who also dig needy characters, often with a sexual undertone, is a pretty interesting one.

I'm not quite ready to write up a full essay on the topic myself, but what do you guys think? Do moe fans have more in common with Twilight fans than they'd like to think?

Even though some would probably hate to admit it, yes they do have a lot in common.

This is EXACTLY what I've been thinking all this time!  I swear, it all boils down to objectifying the other sex in a not-so-healthy way.   For example, I tried getting a non-anime-fan friend to watch Escaflowne with me, but she pointed out how it was basically a romantic fantasy, then wondered why I got at her for liking Twilight.  We're all just looking for a little escapism.

Of course Twilight fans have lots of things in common with fans of other genre`s but unlike Moe fan boy/girls who occasionally worship a piece of sh!t, Twillight fans just worship a piece of shit. that`s responsible for making the horror genre and there by its fans a joke (p!ssing them off in the process) and making actual romance fans vomit and cry (again p!ssing them off too).

I'm going with:
Some moe has merit (meaning there are good shows out there that have moe).
vs.
Twilight is just shit from any angle.

@Kelleth: to be perfectly honest i never got the hype. It didin't strike me as a "masterpiece" of any kind. it was a decent anime, that's it.

Moe is just a general concept that has been adapted primarily to the Anime/Manga culture (Obviously since it's a concept developed by the Japanese). It can be interpreted to be a feature that makes something attractive. By it's definition, moe could be applied to something like twilight, but we could break that down to it's parts, i.e. what makes the characters attractive? The way we see anime or manga characters as cute or voluptuous, we would define those as moe traits and can pick out more specific ones as well. The characters from Twilight are pretty boys who sparkle, and that's what it's fans find attractive...unless they're team Jacob. Point being that, even though many people wouldn't normally apply the term moe to Twilight because it is a western property, since moe is based on subjective attraction, it can be. Though, if this was never a manga, we wouldn't even have considered this.

edit* A counterpoint to the merchandising arguments would be that I don't believe many otaku buy moe themed dildoes. The twilight dildo product page suggests that you "toss it in the fridge or warm under hot water for an authentic experience."
