OUTLAW STAR #2 -- Watch & Learn

You know, when you think about it, this is like SPACE ACE.

I’m sorry, but I’m seeing Gene Starwind as something like the bargain alternative to Spike Spiegel. Need your bad guy caught, but can’t scrape together enough Woolons (or whatever it was) to make it worthwhile for the crew of the Bebop? Then Gene and his pals are there to provide your… adequate services.

Sure, it’s kind of neat to establish up front that no matter how big of a badass this guy tries to present himself as, he was still once a scared kid like everybody else once was. However, I haven’t seen too much so far that’s really made any of this outer space adventuring seem too distinct. Honestly, I’m not exaggerating. As I sit back here and try to recall what I just watched, I’m having a hard time recalling the scenes that went down in this episode. It’s like it all just flopped on my eyeballs and then slid off without leaving much of any residue.

Well, wait - - there was that outer space bar for outlaws. That seemed very 80’s sci-fi.

You know, I’ve heard a lot of commentary about how anime’s been progressively more targeted to Western audiences, but I watch this and I can’t help thinking that it could be the opposite. This totally feels like a genre material from the 80’s (as I said.) Either it's like the sort of blockbuster that just kind of threw some charming archetypes and a lot of exciting scenarios at you and asked you to just to be content in not asking too many questions… or it's like a lot of the animated pastiches that Don Bluth produced. Indeed, OUTLAW STAR sort of feels like a darker SPACE ACE. Something best enjoyed as something like a video installment in a loud arcade.

There you go. Bet I’m the first anime commentator to ever liken OUTLAW STAR to SPACE ACE. That’s why you come here, you know.

Look up this episode, "Outlaw World” and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

for those that did not click the link or know what Space Ace was...

That's 1983 arcade classic. But as much as i hate to disagree i'm gona. So far it reminds me more of Tenchi Muyo with the space ship hidden in the lake bit.As well as the tao masters.Tho i can see what you mean tho .Good stuff so far.
