One Piece on Hiatus

Two year hiatus?!

The Straw Hat crew may be in heavy training for their journey to come, but as it turns out. Everyone else is taking a a long break, readers included.

 Shonen Jump No. 38
 Shonen Jump No. 38
Rumors have been flooding the internet and One Piece communities all over -- but with the release of this week's issue of Shonen Jump No. 38 in Japan -- It's no rumor! It's been confirmed as fact, and this could have an effect on the series forever. After the release of One Piece Ch. 597 this week, One Piece and the series creator/artist Eiichiro Oda is going on a four week break. NoOne Piece chapters are to be expected until Shonen Jump No. 43. For a series that has been on a near nonstop run for thirteen years. It's a well deserved break.

It isn't just this gap in the release schedule that makes this so big. What is to be expected either in Ch. 598 or very soon is a TWO YEAR time gap in story. Big for any tale, but about par for the course of the Shonen line. I've just been wondering what this gap could mean in the future. AfterDragon Ball had a time gap, it had another one after the World's Martial-Arts Tournament, and the series became Dragon Ball Z. Though, the Naruto manga kept the series name after it's time skip. The anime became known as Naruto Shippuden. Currently, theOne Piece manga is at 59 volumes, and the crew hasn't even reached the second half of the Grand Line called the New World. When Luffy and the crew returns, could the series be renamed into something different? Even if the manga doesn't change names. When the anime reaches this point, could it become "One Piece:New World"?

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.  Lets hope Oda has a nice break, I can't wait to see what he's got planned.
ninjadude853on Aug. 26, 2010 at 10:41 a.m.
this is perfect, Oda definately deserves a break, and it makes sense for there to be an actual break for the readers because it helps convey the idea of a time skip

theres just one problem i can't quite put my finger on... what was it? oh yeah!

I DON'T GET TO READ ANY F^%*ING NEW ONE PIECE FOR A MONTH, DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this will be an adjustment for all

also, yes, the anime will be One Piece: New World, it just makes sense
obscurefanon Aug. 26, 2010 at 10:43 a.m.
One Piece New World sounds right but I can't see a series ending when its only three issues from issue 600, although I do think that the show itself might end and begin again as something new.
Naruto79on Aug. 26, 2010 at 11:06 a.m.

It was due. Series that last as long as One Piece generally need time skips to advance characters because having the ENTIRE story take place over a year or so doesn't always make sense.

Roldanon Aug. 26, 2010 at 11:43 a.m.
well the manga's never change name. Dragon Ball was still Dragon Ball after the big time skip but if the anime decides to do a Z/Shippuden title then New World would be awesome. good marketing their also.

 Wow this is big news!
This is a really good plan for people (ME) who haven't read/watched One Piece (ME) and really wants to (ME)
I have two years to catch up!

First off: Oy vey! Four weeks without One Piece? I don't know how I'll survive. (But I think I'll manage.)

Oda definitely deserves a break though. I'm verrrryyyy curious to see what's going to happen after the time skip.
AK_the_Twilighton Aug. 26, 2010 at 1:38 p.m.
Well, I'm not big on time skips (I find them to be a bit distracting), but it's probably for the best.
Gaseroon Aug. 26, 2010 at 1:47 p.m.
After Luffy's message in the newspaper was revealed it seems like there is a well deserved break for Oda.

I certainly hope that there is a time skip and the crew shows up with more (and hopefully more appealing) crewmates and the original crew is much stronger than before. As things stand now, they are not that impressive compared to the other characters.

@Roldan:
Dragon Ball the manga did become Dragon Ball Z after Goku won the World's Martial Arts Tournament. He came back with a kid.

The idea of it being called One Piece New World is just a theory of mine. It just seems to make sense. In Japan it would probably be called "One Piece: Shin Sekai".

@sora_thekey:
I'm unsure if you are joking, but that two year gap isn't for the manga. It's in the story. Two years are going to pass for the characters. Only a month for readers. Much in the same way Naruto had  a two year time skip.
You have a month to catch up with the manga.
Kuma_From_Argentinaon Aug. 26, 2010 at 2:33 p.m.
I need my fix, Oda cannot leave me without OP for a month, I will swim to Japan to beat the crap out of him...
secretzfanon Aug. 26, 2010 at 2:56 p.m.
One Piece story gap and a new name might appear similar to Naruto or DBZ this could be good for the series. A sequel series.
Kayakon Aug. 26, 2010 at 2:59 p.m.
It's gonna be tough without One Piece, but this gives me the chance to catch up on a load of other manga.

I like what Oda is doing, imagine how exited the crew are gonna feel when they finally meet. Were gonna be the exact same. It's gonna be intresting to see all the major changes in the world.

I haven't gotten into One Piece yet, but this sounds really cool.  Maybe i can read all 598 chapters in 4 weeks.    :P

It'll be easy once you become addicted :p

I was shocked when I heard it was going on a four week break. I have a hard time when they skip a week... But with the shocking revelation they that happened last chapter, I think I'll be able to bare it just waiting for what he has in store for after the break. Seeing how the characters change after the 2 year break just like what happened with naruto.
Destinyheroknighton Aug. 26, 2010 at 5:19 p.m.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I cant wait four week
daikarion Aug. 26, 2010 at 6:48 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: One Piece New world does seem like a cool and actual possibility for a name.

Also I think its awesome that One Piece Strong World is Canon. Also When I read that One piece Strong World would be be Luffy's last adventure as a 17-year old. It made me sad thinking there wouldn't be any more movies but find out they are taking a taking a break and going 2 years into the future it makes me happier.
EganTheVile1on Aug. 26, 2010 at 7:49 p.m.
You got me excited over nothing, thought my nephew would stop talking about One Piece for two years, LOL :)

A time skip is always good

Dig Deeper into Time Skip

When a series jumps several months or even several years. Usually used in series staring younger kids and it resumes when they're teenagers or even adults.
