ONE PIECE #668 -- Special Review

I'm... tapping out of this round of the tourney.

Normally, I don’t mind the tournament trope. If we’re all coming to shonen to watch fighting, there’s no problem with the creators occasionally just doing away with set-ups and giving us more of what we came for, right? Sure, the ‘Dark Tournament’ arc of YU YU HAKUSHO got repetitive sometimes, but I could still get swept up in it feeling like a real event. And the tourney arc I’ve been re-visiting in DRAGON BALL has just been hilarious. Each match is more like a skit.

Still, those arcs have their critics, and I’m feeling their pain, now. This whole B-plot with Rebecca is just the definition of a show spinning its wheels before the next legitimate story development comes along. The scenes with the bad guys toying with the less-than-bad-guys, and dropping them in the moat? It nearly motivated me to shout at the screen - - “Get on with it already!”

I’m having the hardest time keeping my attention on this and that’s saying a lot. It’s ONE PIECE! It’s so colorful. How could it ever be boring? Well…

Let’s call this a noble experiment. I tried to get back into this. I wanted to comment on it, because it’s still the #1 show. However, that was only going to work if I never stopped watching after ‘Punk Hazard,’ so I might as well quit while I’m (sort-of?) ahead. I’ll just use the opportunity to suggest that more series should probably get a ‘Kai’ edition. We’ve seen JOJO and PSYCHO-PASS get abbreviated versions - - and those were shows with little filler! ONE PIECE could definitely use one. Eesh.

Watch "the Final Round Starts! Diamante the Hero Shows Up!" and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.

Anyway, I think your skipping the first half of the arc, cut down on your enjoyment of Rebecca's plot. (also you miss all the wrestling reference) But the Anime didn't help with the draw out scenes, do wish they Kai One Piece

In my opinion, if you're not a big One Piece fan that have been following the series for a long time, the chances are that it will be very difficult for you to enjoy the current episodes of the anime.

I think I have said this before but, Tom I strongly suggest you to watch the older episodes (the Arlong Park Arc and the Drum Island Arc are my recommendations), and I know, they don't look very good, but the pacing was not that bad (from what I can remember), the arcs were shorter (the Drum Island Arc which is Chopper centered only has 14 episodes, slightly more than a seasonal anime) and there are not thousands of characters and references to previous arcs that you don't know.

Psycho Pass didn't get a Kai version. Instead, it just combined the episodes into 11 hour episodes with so called new footage. For One Piece, I heard the manga arc was at Dressrosa arc, so the anime is stalling.

Watching One Piece in bulk is fun, especially when you have hundreds of episodes left. I have never understood this need people keep mentioning to catch up. If you are enjoying a show, why would you want to catch up or get to the end where you then have to wait a week for each new episode.
I am currently watching Hajime no Ippo from the first episode and it is quite the experience.
