ONE PIECE #625 - - Special Review

You could say a combatant got... cold feet. It's funny because he has ice powers.

Our fearless leader Tom Pinchuk sure has been showing a sadistic streak lately. He wanted me to review the latest episode of ONE PIECE, which is about 300 episodes later than where I am in the series! I'm not really concerned about spoilers, but once again my limited knowledge of the show hopefully lends a perspective that you regular watchers don't usually get.

So the episode, entitled "Intense! Aokiji vs. Dolflamingo!", promises a standoff between a WWE reject and Slash's older, bigger brother. What it instead delivers is what felt like ten straight minutes of people staring at each other, followed by the biggest letdown I've ever seen a show pull.

Now, I try to be epicurean in my storytelling tastes. I have been known to say things like "anticlimax is still climax" in defense of unpopular story decisions. But when you're a shonen fighty-fighty show and you title your damn episode about a fight then I have certain expectations - - one of which is that no one CHUMPS OUT OF THE FIGHT. LIKE A CHUMP.

You're clearly just buying time, ONE PIECE--you're giving me plot blueballs. Promises were made. Promises were broken due to budget concerns.

Then you know what? Let's spend more than half the episode with the Straw Hats who aren't even fighting anyone. They're all just sort of hanging out, relaxing, and dealing with a whole bunch of hangers on and prisoners. This includes a child who has I think the best trollface of any anime character I've ever seen.

This is the face of a monster.
This is the face of a monster.

This whole thing just smacks of filler bloat to me... hopefully it'll pick up again soon. This series deserves better.

Watch this episode, "Intense! Aokiji vs. Dolflamingo!" here and decide for yourself, then let us know what you think in the comments section below!

I really do hate Toei episode titles, they just lie to the Anime fans. I wasn't disappointed, because I knew a head time they wasn't going to fight

Anyway, the Anime is going into a filler arc

The titles are known to focus on usually the most important aspect of the episode. Whether that moment is the focus of the episode or fraction of it. But to be fair it wasn't "Intense Battle" just "Intense" and I did think it was a pretty intense showdown of steel nerves and mind games, but I see your point... To be fair, Doflamingo was outmatched and new he couldn't waste time given how his arm was being twisted by Law and needed to adopt a new plan fast, which was a smart move.

Furthermore, if you're planning on tackling this next arc in Tom's stead, it will be going on a filler arc for a while (only 2 episodes have been named so far but they usually last between 4-10). One Piece filler arcs are much better than when they try to cram in filler into a cannon episode, since here they get to chose the pace because it's an original story. They are total side stories but more often than not, they're rather good.

This episode was sort of an amalgamation of two separate chapters. I can say for certain that Momonosuke's tour around the ship was complete filler fluff. They're trying to do some balancing acts with this episode. Seems they're going to be putting in some filler episodes, likely to finish off the year. The ending of this episode is complete filler. This will probably last for four episodes.

Since you're relatively new to the series, it's not that surprising that Doflamingo wouldn't want to take on Kuzan. Doflamingo isn't stupid. Kuzan could have killed him.

Last week's episode was far more intense, but it's ironic that the battle they show never appeared in the manga. You only saw the beginning and the aftermath. The episode title is misleading, but titles often are. I would say that the chapter that this fight takes place in is titled "Morning Edition" in the manga.

If you want to catch up on ONE PIECE, I've written summaries of all the canon story arcs here. I still need to proofread it. I wrote it up pretty quick. It was made to help people catch up on events.

this is why I stick to the manga and watch the anime only every now and again out of loyalty to the manga, even though they sometimes just ruin it -.-

Yeah, the description of the episode was basically a lie. I was really hoping that they threw down. It was so dumb.
