ONE PIECE #600 - - Special Review

How creepier could you make this guy? Seriously?

I can’t help but see something pointed about the assembly-line nature of production for this show. The 600th episodes just sort-of comes and goes without any fanfare. Perhaps the three-way-crossover with TORIKO and DBZ already marked the radius of this with enough pomp, already, but still… let’s put this in perspective. The current longest-running American show is the SIMPSONS, and that’s only 528 episodes. The longest-running American show, historically, is GUNSMOKE with a 635 episode count, and it’ll be few years SIMPSONS gets close to catching up to it.

ONE PIECE’s count has long eclipsed SIMPSONS’, and it’s only a matter of months before it pass GUNSMOKE. Right now, we’re talking about 600 episodes, at about 20 minutes (on average), with 200 hours of programming in total. That means, you could watch the show continuously, for a week straight, and still have plenty of material left. That’s a staggering feat...

…And the fact that the show can just casually shrug such a milestone off convinces me, once again, that we’re seeing a metastasized stage of storytelling here.

Now, what about the episode itself? Well, Caesar continues to be the creepiest villain ever. I felt legitimately uncomfortable in my skin when the kids all came sprinting after him because he’s basically offering them candy out of his hand. One of you lunatics said that, later in the arc, we’ll see Luffy get seriously pissed at the guy, and if this particular sub-plot continues to develop, I can see some the Straw Hat getting plenty of fuel for some burning, righteous indignation.

Past that, I don’t know any of the villains lurking in the shadows during Caesar’s infomercial, so it had no effect on me. Brownbeard’s return was a nice surprise, but I was more impacted by Chopper’s all-too-adorable antics as he’s trying to sneak around. Anything Chopper does is cute!

Watch this episode, "Save the Children! The Master's Evil Hands Close In!” here and decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous episode here.

Well, in all fairness, the 600th episode didn't have any fan fair in the US. Who really knows what sort of promotional deals or celebrations are being held in Japan. It's not as if we're getting the Japanese commercials or newspaper advertisements. They did basically create ONE PIECE FILM: STRONG WORLD to celebrate the ten year anniversary of the series back in 2009.

You also need to put into perspective that this anime series runs weekly almost ever week in the year. There are only a handful of breaks. That means they reach the hundreds of episodes at a far father rate than US based shows do. DETECTIVE CONAN has been running longer in Japan than ONE PIECE.

This is just about the time in the story where I started reviewing ONE PIECE for the Anime Vice front page. What I noticed about Caesar is that he's the embodiment of the evils of science. Science for good is thought of as a force that finds ways to help people. Science at its most evil is a force for self glorification and personal wealth.

If the episode titles are to be believed, Act 3, that is the counter attack on Caesar, begins in episode 603. The title is actually translated as "The Counterattack Begins! Luffy and Law's Great Escape".

This villain is like a pedophile. He kidnaps children and drugs them.

@Obito: I think that's the point. Anyone leading children around for nefarious purposes is the most detestable person. If he killed a dog, he'd become the worst villain ever.

I think this 100 episode thing is, again, American Comic book thinking. The episode does not have to acknowledge a 100 episode milestone, or have a special episode. Maybe in the Japanese broadcast it did, or maybe in Shounen Jump or some official website, they did.

I like that OP is chugging along, continuing the story, and not sidelining it to celebrate. It's a big feat, but I don't think OP's ever acknowledged a milestone episode within the show. If you want an acknowledgement of a 100 episode milestone, I guess you'll have to watch Toriko-- possibly risking the very foundations of you relationship with one Sam Weller.

@YotaruVegeta: Well, that makes sense.

The anime is kind of restricted by its pacing, they have to follow the storyline of the manga so there are no big moments because of the episode number.

With the manga Oda sometimes makes sure to drop big important moments or bombshells into milestone numbered chapters. He cut some content to make sure the crew set out for the Grand Line on chapter 100 for example.
