ONE PIECE #592 - - Special Review

If drugs were a super-villain, they'd be...

Wouldn’t you know - - the CARTOON ALL-STARS TO THE RESCUE comparison points just keep popping up.

As I recall, the villain of that after-school special was a snickering, smoky phantom personifying the evils of marijuana. His aim was to get every kid in sight hooked on dope, then stand back and cackle as they struggled with the various, terrible symptoms of addiction and withdrawal. That sounds enough like Caesar Clown to me so, from here on out, I’m just going to assume he ate the one Devil Fruit that turns you into devil weed and hitherto view this arc as ONE PIECE’s answer to REEFER MADNESS.

Don’t ask me how the “Yeti Cool Brothers” fit into this analogy. I’m not sure how they fit into the show itself, to be honest. Yeah yeah, I know they probably were given a proper intro 200 episodes or so ago. And I know Oda loves to gives almost every character a unique verbal ticks that they just… keep… hitting. Still, I think even the kids audience that is show is (sometimes? ostensibly?) intended for would be rolling their eyes about a couple of dudes working the word “cool” into every single line (didn’t we all learn a terrible lesson from this mind-numbing pun onslaught?).

Of course, any cliché can be made fresh with the right execution so, on the other end of this episode, I’ll tip my straw hat to this episode for coming up with a truly novel spin on the “quick-draw : instant-deathstroke : delayed reaction” gag we’ve seen in thousands of samurai stories. You know, the one where a character unsheathes (and sometimes re-sheathes, too) his katana so fast, and his opponent is just standing there stupidly, and you’re not totally sure what happens until the opponent finally just collapses?

Well, the show takes an interesting approach to that with Law toward the end, framing the stunt from the least exciting angle and then just lingering on that shot with almost clinical patience. It’s a stand-out moment, and I’d like to think it was fashioned to do something actually “cool”…

...though I wonder if maybe they opted not to show any violence in this particular part because they were already “licking the red” on the TV censor’s dial with Brownbeard’s brutal execution and the aforementioned intense depiction of drug addiction.

Watch this episode, "To Annihilate the Straw Hats! Legendary Assassins Descend!” here and decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous episode here.

nah the yeti cool brothers are just some cannon fodder at the moment to get the story moving on in the future :P

What ^ he said. As I remember there really is only one more new character left that they haven't introduced. And he has a bigger impact on the story for this arc than the Cool Brothers. Even though Smoker and the gang already know him. Because having non-main characters explain who a new character is through events in their past that the audience has never seen is apparently what Oda does to get the ball rolling.

One of my favorite gags of this whole episode was how Brownbeard went on about how little to nothing is known about the Yeti Cool Brothers, but he still manages to name off their entire story till Nami cuts him off.

Caesar's powers are pretty blatant. He has the name of his devil fruit printed right on his front.

The next episode should be both awesome and funny.

The reshealth of the sword is generally based on the sword technique called Iai.

I keep trying to get in to OP but...I just can't, none of the arcs so far (and I've read pretty much all of them) have impressed me.

Petiewon April 27, 2013 at 4:05 a.m.

@The Stegman: Were you reading them in order? I think if you still didn't like it by the Arlong arc it'd be best to just quit. No point in forcing yourself to read something you don't really like!

The Stegmanon April 27, 2013 at 3:05 p.m.

@Petiew: Yes, I read them in order, and if it was any other series, I would have quit a long, long time ago (I finally caught up to the current arc last week) but it's One Piece, it's the highest selling manga ever, so I keep trying to get into it so I can see what the fuss is about, and honestly, I still don't see it, the only arc that did anything for me was when Luffy recruited Sanji (I think it's the Baratie arc or something like that) other than that..nope, nothin.

@The Stegman: Well, not everyone can enjoy every manga. I guess I'm a little late in telling you to just drop it, since you've read over 700 chapters, but you should just stop following it.You could spend the time reading something you find more enjoyable. I'd say the absolute maximum someone should follow One Piece to see if they like it is to around chapter 100. Even that's a stretch though.

Destinyheroknighton April 27, 2013 at 6:07 p.m.

@The Stegman:

It very simple, stop watching and reading it. You don't need to force yourself to watch or read something you don't enjoy because it a best seller.

I got into One Piece because I was interested in the world, the art and characters, not because it is the best selling manga. To me it is the second best shonen out there (the first being Magi). Trying to get into a series because its popular is just wrong. Follow your own will not the will of the people, because 9 out of 10 it won't be of your taste

If you are curious why people like One Piece, then go to a OP forum or listen to a podcast about it. That is better then wasting your time and money on something that you don't enjoy reading or watching.

Anyway, I don't remember the Yeti Cool Brothers saying cool that much in the manga (but it been a long time)
