ONE PIECE #587 - - Special Review

So... this guy gets his powers from his cigars?

So... when the production schedules of a weekly manga and its weekly anime adaptation are so closely intertwined, I hope you lunatics will forgive me for occasionally mixing the two up. As it turns out, while ONE PIECE the show has been experiencing some intermittent delays, it was actually ONE PIECE the manga that was on hiatus this week. I’ll still go ahead with my write-ups on the first few episodes of the series, in my own time, but here’s the write-up on the latest one, all the same…

With every episode I watch, I find myself constantly trying to figure out how to describe this. You’ve probably noticed as much if you’ve been keeping up with these write-ups. ONE PIECE really is that unique of a creature in all of pop culture.

Most of the time, I’m just trying to figure out what other stories it can be likened to (from SPONGEBOB to DBZ to PETER PAN to POPEYE and then to the OZ books, and so on and so forth) and I’ve realized that there really is no one-to-one comparison because of the story’s very precise attitude about itself. It has all the silliness and whimsy of the classic children’s books and comic strips I’ve just listed, but it somehow manages to infuse that with what I call “shonen kick ass.”

Here, you’ve got the climatic duel between Smoker and the “Surgeon” (I didn’t quite catch the guy’s name). Take even half a step back from it, and it’s utterly silly. I mean, one of the combatants is a guy with smoke powers seemingly powered by the two cigars he’s constantly chomping. The very MORTAL KOMBAT deathblow that then gets dealt upon him - - with the Surgeon simply plucking a very precise cubic section out of his heart - - is also kind-of silly in its details.

Oda knows that. You know that. Yet, because the show kind-of just barrels along, anyway, we’re all able to have our cake and eat it, too. That is, you can take this show’s seriously (and specifically, get jacked up about it) even while you’re not taking it seriously, at all, at the same time. It’s a very precise quality, and I think it’s a big part of the show’s success.

I realize I’ve focused on a very specific part of this episode. I could talk about how much fun the X4 FREAKY FRIDAY body swap has been, or how satisfying Luffy’s humiliation of the crocodile centaur guy is, or how the pink gas creature is utterly spooky to behold. But, I don’t know - - the last fight was just so cool, I wanted to focus squarely on it.

I suppose that's a very Munky D. Luffy attitude, no?

Watch this episode, "A Collision! Law vs. Vice Admiral Smoker!” here and decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous episode here.

Smoker's power actually comes from a devil fruit.
There are 3 different types of fruits. Logia, changes the user's body into some kind of element and gives them control of it. They also become intangiable to regular attacks. (Smoker has a logia fruit.)
Zoan is a type of transformation fruit, gives the user a variety of forms to turn into. Normally regular, animal and hybrid. (Chopper ate a human zoan fruit which made him intelligent, before that he was just a regular reindeer)
Paramecia fruits alter the user's body in some weird way, much broader than the other 2. (Luffy, Law, Brook and Robin all have paramecia powers.)

Smoker is a devil fruit user who ate the Plume-Plume fruit. As Luffy's body is made of rubber. Smoker's body is made up of smoke. He was one of the first Logia-types introduced in the series. He just also happens to be a chain smoker who always has multiple cigars in his mouth.

The fight between Smoker and Trafalgar Law is pretty awesome. Law's powers are cool.

I think one of the reasons that ONE PIECE is just so stellar in it's popularity is becasue of the mixture of almost child-friendly design with incredible action and drama. It makes it more accessible to a larger audience. Sort of like a kid's movie that the parents also enjoy watching for the story.

This episode they dropped the name "Joker". That's going to become more important later on. When he's revealed. I saw quite a few comparison's to the Clown Prince.

That guy the "surgeon" is a fan favorite trafalgar law!! one of the seven war lords of the sea. This fightwas epic. its not everyday you see a warlord fight a vice admiral in one piece.

The cubbed heart part is apart of his powers ROOM,SHAMBLES, and a couple of other techniques he's the surgeon of death who delivered a 100 pirate hearts to marine HQ to become a warlord

And btw one piecemay in fact be a silly show but there shouldnt be anything as silly as getting your powers from a cigar lol..when some oe has a strange power its either haki or a devil fruit.

How could you forget TRAFALGAR LAW? Smoker doesn't say it enough??

Trafalgar Law's powers frighten me. All of the people from Luffy's generation frighten me, luffy has gotten much much more powerful and if they're even hinting at what I think is going to happen in the manga, the unspeakable is going to happen and I'm going to lose my shit.

The villain Ceasar from this arc also has a similar ability like Smoker and can only be combatted by having a strong haki ability. That mental badassness power.
