ONE PIECE #578 - - Special Review

This is actually a lot kinkier than it looks.

And we’re back, somewhat, to cover the last ONE PIECE episode of 2012. Apparently, the show’s staff took a week-long hiatus themselves, so we’ve got a little while before romanticism kicks back into third gear for the new year. (Or whatever ONE PIECE-related metaphor works best for you).

Anyway, I’ve never claimed to have a mind outside of the gutter, so I’ll make as many lewd inferences into Luffy’s massive attack on the extra-jointed pirate as are available. Seriously, just a few episodes back, one of you lunatics asserted that the guy’s ideal woman would probably have to be between two slices of bread. And, now… well… now he actually eats a girl and she promptly expands to full size inside his gut and then literally stretches his rubber skin all the way out.

It’s a scenario that you previously would’ve expected out of a ROBOT CHICKEN sketch about the time Mr. Fantastic and the Wasp got drunk together. So... my straw hat’s off to Oda for finally realizing what many a dirty mind has only speculated about for years.

To fixate on another detail - - is the bad guy’s llama sidekick really supposed to be a bazooka that’s mutated after eating one of this world’s many power-granting fruits? Sure, in a show where submarines are launching out of the water like flying fish and extra limbs just spontaneously pop out of thin air, that concept shouldn’t be too unexpected. But call me a stickler for wanting to clarify things, because I suspect “bazooka” might refer to some special kind of creature in this world and not the WWII-era rocket launcher of which we’re more familiar.

Again, would one of you more learned fans care to enlighten me about this?

Lastly, I’ve got to say that, after watching so many episodes of this show in succession, the non-stop parade of new threats and characters has gotten seriously dizzying. I feel like we just hopped over about three “false starts” for potential new villains to settle on this one - - and now we’re already moving onto the next! You really do need the kind of youthful enthusiasm that counts down to sunshine in order to keep up with this show.

Watch this episode, "Z's Ambition! Luffy vs. Shuzo!” here and decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous episode here.

I really need to catch on this series.

Dekkenon Dec. 31, 2012 at 1:24 p.m.

Oh jeez, this episode is one of the most terrible filler episodes that I've ever seen, normally a lot of things don't make sense in One Piece, but the filler episodes are just crazy (in a bad way).

Fortunately, the next arc is a lot more better than this shit.

But anyway, thanks for keep reviewing One Piece.

YotaruVegetaon Dec. 31, 2012 at 1:29 p.m.

YES! This episode made me love Alpacachino even more! He's a bazooka (or is he a cannon??) who ATE a gum-gum fruit! How does that even happen? I don't think there's any more backstory to that. I think a bazooka had a gum-gum fruit dropped into it, and it became a living creature.

@Nightwolf: Whereabouts did you stop watching?

YotaruVegetaon Dec. 31, 2012 at 1:30 p.m.

@Dekken: I had fun with it, as always. OP's filler is better than other shounen anime filler, and better than most canon episodes of any other anime.

Destinyheroknighton Dec. 31, 2012 at 2:56 p.m.

Dear lord how much I dislike this episode

Tom those guys are movie villains. They are not going to appear in the next Arc

The filler started out good and then it just goes down hill fast, Panz Fry didn't really have a personality. He just stand there with his mouth open (but I do like Lily, because she was being smart about her powers)

The main villain wasn't good, (did like Alpacachino) and seem less interesting version of a villain coming up

And the animation just become really bad near the end (hoping it be better for the next arc)

Also why didn't Luffy have boobs?

Dekkenon Dec. 31, 2012 at 3:10 p.m.

@YotaruVegeta: I agree with you, OP's filler episodes are more entertaining than other anime fillers (in my opinion).

Kino88on Dec. 31, 2012 at 3:44 p.m.

I tried to watch this show, but........I can,t keep up with it, there,s just too much!, too much cannon, too much mythology,

ONE PIECE!!! IT,S NEVER ENDING MADNESS WILL CONSUME THE UNIVERSE!!!, MAKE IT STOP!!! DAMMIT!!!, DAMMIT!!! ALL TOO HELL!!!!,

You think that's bad? I haven't even watched Naruto Shippuden yet.

ShadowKnight508 moderator on Dec. 31, 2012 at 8:15 p.m.

@Nightwolf: That is pretty bad...but not as bad as me, unfortunately (Kinda ashamed to admit that I have not even started the original Naruto so I can try Naruto Shippuden out) o_O

Strangely I feel better now knowing that you're worse than me.

@Nightwolf: I would say jump to the war, then continue from there to catch up. Then go back eventually.

YotaruVegetaon Jan. 1, 2013 at 11:17 a.m.

@Nightwolf: Lucky you. You don't have to sit and wait for filler arcs to end.

That's the problem with me, I have to see everything from beginning to end otherwise I feel like i've missed out.

I never really had big problem with filler arcs; I never get way people watch fillers when their just gonna complain until it ends, just skip the whole thing and come back when the main story stars back up.

Well, it seems no one has answered your questions yet, Tom. The concept of objects eating devil fruits isn't a new idea. It's been in the series a few times before. It's never been fully explained, but it seems the World Government scientist, Dr, Vegapunk, discovered some method for objects to "eat" devil fruits. They were merged with the animal Zoan devil fruits and can now move around on their own will.

This filler episode has kind of an error in it. When Luffy and Lily get large together, He's standing in the ocean and neither of them seem at all effected. I guess he could be standing on some of the rocks, but

This one show has the universe that comics have been wanting to make for decades. It has a large cast with a consistent continuity, and deaths actually have meaning. It's not about "Oh, sales are low so time to have a death or put Wolverine in every title." Imagine if the extended universe of STAR WARS was actually all tied into one another in actually meaningful ways. The sales on ONE PIECE are just staggering in Japan. There is nothing even selling close to its numbers.

You've yet to watch a full arc, and this coming one is probbaly the best time. Oda has completely flipped the script on this time. He hasn't used a lot of his more famous tropes.

This filler arc was really terrible. It looked promising to begin with, but made me remember why I dislike the anime adaption of One Piece so much. Luffy standing in the water, like mentioned above was pretty silly and a big oversight. It reminds me of the infamous dragon filler arc.

I guess you didn't notice since you haven't read the manga Tom, but this was a short filler arc to tie in events with the new movie. It was a good idea, but the quality of the episodes themselves were lacking. The big bad guy at the end of the episode is the movie villain and won't be mentioned again.
YotaruVegetaon Jan. 2, 2013 at 11:13 a.m.

@Nightwolf: I don't complain. I just see the filler in my queue, erase them, and use that time to watch anime without filler. I watch OP filler, though!

YotaruVegetaon Jan. 2, 2013 at 11:14 a.m.

@Nightwolf: At nearly 600 episodes, you'll drive yourself crazy.
