One Fan’s Opinion: Where is the Hot Blood?

Hot blood or bust.

I’m just going to go ahead and say it. I love hot blooded characters. I love hot blooded anime, and I love hot blooded manga, I just wish they made more of it. But that’s not all, why isn’t there hot blood on American television shows and films, why is it almost purely a Japanese thing?

A lot of you are probably wondering what this hot blood stuff is. Well, a hot blooded character is a person who is burning so brightly with passion and emotion that they can appear to do anything, no matter what. With their guts alone they usually solve all problems headfirst, and worry about consequences later. They also arm themselves with cheesy lines of dialogue, that comes off as the most amazing thing you ever heard thanks to their hot blood. I’m sure you have a character in mind as I write this, but here a re a few examples: Kamina, Guy Shishio, Might Guy, Madarame Ikkaku, Major Armstrong to name a few, but this is only a brief sample.

A good hot blooded anime comes around every other year it seems, and sometimes it doesn’t come at all. Hell, the last great pure hot blooded anime could have been 2007’s Gurren Lagann, though Needless gets a nod as well. Either way, there needs to be more, a lot more. Push moe aside and give me two hot blooded shows per season. I can’t be alone in thinking this, even in Japan fans love the over-the-top performance these anime gives us (they just sometimes don’t sell as good).

What really saddens me is that there aren’t any hot blooded stories in the west. The closest I think we got to a pure hot blooded film is 300, and in the TV world there is always Jack Bauer, because he gets the job done. However, there isn’t a lot more than that. If done correctly, it could be very popular in the west. And when I say correctly, I say keep it fun, funny, and serious (but only at the right times).

Nothing can make my day better than watching a hot blooded character give his hot blooded speech, and then scream. Some people think this is bad, they think this is corny and unrealistic, and maybe even juvenile. What I say to them is that this is supposed to be corny, unrealistic, and juvenile, but at the same time it speaks to us purely emotionally, almost as if this is who we truly want to be. Well, at least that’s true for me.

I totally agree. Kamina is the best part of Gurren Lagann and anything that can combat the evil that is moe is all right with me.

And i quote "Take this! My love, my anger, and all of my sorrow!" "SHINING FINGER SWORD!!!" -Domon Kasshu.

I find it kind of stupid after a while. Don't get me wrong Guy and Domon are cool, but sometimes being to hot blooded actually becomes comedic and takes the seriousness out of a situation.

I think hot-bloodedness doesn't fit with our national 'image'. Hence the reason giant robot shows don't do well here in the US but do wonderfully in countries with more Latin blood (Italy, parts of South America, etc). There's an inherent machismo that doesn't quite click with the American psyche right. Of course, there are some of us here that can't get enough hot-blooded giant robot action. I count myself amongst that number...

Hot bloodedness is one of the requirement for an epic mech genre

Hot bloodedness >>>> anything in mecha combat

The first picture has nine men, no women?  Flashy, extravagant clothing, with lots of collar and bright colors?  Looks suspiciously gay.  Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's an odd assembly of characters and styles.

I function thanks to the Hot-blooded animes....
Thanks Ryoma Nagare for being as crazy as you are!
cfatalison May 30, 2010 at 5:31 a.m.
@JD: there's a women version somewhere

then again GAR is actually a man concept, it's something so MANLY it make you gay for it
Dream is online on May 30, 2010 at 6:03 a.m.
Hot-blooded, eh? If I recall, Martian Successor Nadesico pokes fun of the concept using Gai Daigoji who's a hot-blooded failure of a mecha pilot (never actually gets to be the hero) and is a mecha anime otaku who obsesses over hot-blooded anime characters.
Burntlettuceon May 30, 2010 at 6:17 a.m.
I don't really like Hot-blooded characters, or hot-blooded anime either. I like really complex and deep characters, and hot-blooded characters don't fit this.
reinon May 30, 2010 at 6:25 a.m.
Well. Generator rex is the First thing that comes to mind, But he doesn't exactly fit. He Has Hot-blooded moments, But when he's not in hot-blooded mode he loses his powers. Hrmm
FekketCantenelon May 30, 2010 at 8:26 a.m.
@VinceA:  I was actually thinking sort of the opposite. From what I understand, in Japan, a hot-blooded person is considered either socially inept or a likely criminal. Therefore, to see one on TV being admirable is an interesting juxtaposition that I think would fascinate Japanese viewers.

Meanwhile, in the US, we have no problem with people getting excited, overconfident, and boisterous. Just go to a tailgate party and see what I mean. Therefore, seeing someone like that on TV is mostly 'nothing special' to Americans.

Me, I can take them in small doses. Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho was my ideal of this: He switched between serious (even stupid) and (if Yukina was around or if the situation otherwise called for it) a hot-blooded macho man whose skin literally steamed with the burning of his fiery heart. That way, neither state got old and boring.
Ryokanon May 30, 2010 at 8:38 a.m.

This is a part of the japanese characater here...

There's a quote of Jocho Yamamoto who say "If one act immediately, seven on ten of his action will be succesful".

This guy Jocho Yamamoto, has practically forged and defines the bushido codes and samouraï attitude, so, yeah...

But there's some Hot Blooded character in the west :

Hawkeye (Who's gone after the dark avenger alone against the advice of the entire crew.)

Guy Gardner in the green lantern corp has a reputation of this.

Deadpool (Who's hotblooded, imprevisible and crazy...)

And I'm sure there's some more in comics a least...

@FekketCantenel: I agree with the hot-blooded part being so much of a norm in the US that it's hard to point out individuals.  The whole i'm kicking ass and taking names, damn what anyone else thinks, my way or the highway attitude is quintessential trait of a lot of American heroes.

I can only take so much of the anime variety though.  They usually come packed with non-stop corny punchlines and goofy outfits.  It's cool in shows that are super comedic but it wears thin if it goes unchecked in action shows... unless these guys are kicking ass on a regular basis. Even then it's best in moderation.
cfatalison May 30, 2010 at 9:30 a.m.
@Dream: truth to be told the only RR mecha who should be hot blooded is Kyosuke nanbu
Bellumon May 30, 2010 at 9:53 a.m.
I'VE GOT A FEVER OF A HUNDRED AND THREEEEEEEEEE!

....Sorry.
Lance_McCloudon May 30, 2010 at 9:58 a.m.
@JD: I dont know who made that image, but there is another image by the same person with female characters.

And in my opinion, Gar and hot blood aren't traits only found in male characters. We have Shizuru,  Noriko, Asuka,  Allenby and  Katina to mention a few of my favorites.

@Dream: Nadesico poked fun at a lot of things (my favorite part is how they called out how stupid many parts of Evangelion was, all in a subtle way, but thats my interpretation) but hot blood was a something they didn't just poke fun at, as it was a core concept and theme for the show. I haven't seen it in a while so I cant point out any specific examples, but I remember it was there through Gekigengar 3 and several cahracters. Ryoko is another good example of a hot blooded female character.

I also agree with the point of this article, there is to little hot blood in anime nowadays. The moe fans have tons of series, but fans of gar and hot blood will have to hope for even one show each season with something like this in the  list of upcoming series. I'm sure it will turn around eventually though, the moe trend is clearly not healthy for the anime industry as its fans don't seem to buy any DVDs, and the merchandise is just as much third party knockoffs as they are official goods. Not saying that mecha and action fans as much better, but they seem more prone of supporting a certain anime even after its release and not just jump from one anime to the next as soon as the last episode has aired. And as I said, its a trend and trends cahnge. If we will get more hot blood in the future, I'm not sure as another factor is that you need a lot of money to animate good action scenes, where as drama and mote is cheaper. So the economic situation will have to change as well or we will just get the occasional hot blooded anime.

Hot bloodedness is something that over time becomes ridiculous in itself and is typical of the exaggerated personalities we see in anime.

Western characters are either brooding or cool. Rarely is such a character explored in the Western form of writing. The only example I can think of is Raphael from the Ninja Turtles, and potentially the Hulk if he could form full sentences. Actually, Aquaman from the Batman: Brave and the Bold cartoon is like that as well.

It would be interesting to see a main character in a Western cartoon/show be hot blooded.
Brenderouson May 30, 2010 at 11:46 a.m.
Probably because "hot-blooded" characters are kinda ridiculous.
Kelleth moderator on May 30, 2010 at 1:17 p.m.
I fully agree with this! I love hot blooded characters in both anime and tokusatsu
Though no western examples come to mind at the moment, mostly because when we have a hot blooded characters in western sources they also tend to be giant a-holes :P

Dig Deeper into Hot-blooded

Someone who can't think calmly and always jumps into action without thinking much. They're rather unpredictable for both their allies and their enemies.
