What I want to know is why Toei is holding back, why they aren’t jumping in head first into this giant pool of cash that will be theres if they jumpstart this franchise. Face it, Dragon Ball prints money, both in Japan and the US. Just look at FUNimation, they constantly release collection after collection of the same series and people still buy it!
But it isn’t as simple as that. They need backing from Akira Toriyama, the man who created Dragon Ball, and he is missing from the picture. Toriyama is finished with Dragon Ball or so he states, but he can never truly run away from it. Recently, he has been working with Bandai Namco Games on the Dragon Ball Online MMORPG. He supervises all aspects from story, to character designs, and art direction. He states that this game will act as a true sequel to the manga.
One would argue that the manga’s storyline is perfect for what it is, with a fantastic beginning, middle, and end. This is definitely true, just look at how badly Dragon Ball GT messed everything up. One of the reasons it sucked was because they messed with already established characters. But it might not have been so bad if they created all new characters for the show, but kept the plot the same; perhaps throw some cameos in there for good measure as well.
All they have to do for this new sequel would be to create an anime from scratch with all new characters, but in the same universe. The old characters can be in the anime, but it won’t be about them this time. Hell, they can even make it take place during DBZ, but just on another planet, or on the other side of the world. That takes a lot of planning though, so I would suggest them making it sometime in the future to help snuff out any story discrepancies.
I not asking for much, only a chance to see my favorite childhood show back again, but with some real HD polish this time. There is still some life left in this franchise, and hopefully the popularity of the online game will help convince Toei to finally sit down and create another masterpiece.

An anime based on the future trunks timeline with the budokai tenkaichi game on the psp story would be interesting
Future gohan gets ultimate form *orgasm*
My first anime was Speed Racer on broadcast television in the 70's on afternoons after school, and my second (decades later) was Evangelion on SBS in Australia, so maybe I'm not typical.
I am a huge fan of science fiction, in particular the usage of time travel and the effects thereof on the flow of events, as we more than found out by trunks shifting through time in the original series. i think that there could be a great deal of unexplored realities within the z universe that can provide for more than just a fleeting interest. Something which changes the landscape of the Z universe for all time.
Something else which i believe need exploration within the framework of the Z universe is a story which develops more than just a conventional good vs bad story, it is time to blur those lines, much like vegeta, he is the ultimate example of the alignment change effect within the saga.
We need something which isn't just about flashbang bright-light battles, we need something which hits home, and which resonates thought provocation in much the same ways that Code Geass and neon genesis Evangelion (just to name two) has done.
I look forward to the continuing exploration of the Z universe and sincerely hope that we have not seen its end yet.
And HELL NO!!! if it does make a stupid continuation it will have to be about Goku jr and Vegeta jr pretty bland IMO
I loved DBZ, but I don't think it need a sequel. Face it : GT was terrible, and Akira Toriyama admitted that he wanted to end it after Cell, maybe even after Freeza.
I didn't liked much DBZ in the Buu arc, so, no.
At worse, it would be cool, but not with Goku : it would be with Goten, or Trunk, or maybe the Two. Hell ! Pan could be good : I alwys wondered what a supersyan girl could look like... (And with fight, it would provide some fanservice... :) )
Actually having mostly read the manga I suppose there's still tens of hours of filler I've yet to see so I'm good.
I can't imagine there's much potential left in the Dragon Ball universe, although the idea of brand new characters, while risky, might yield results.
No you may not have my rock, its where I get the best WiFi reception. If the only reason to watch Dragonball is people feeling nostalgia over for their entry anime - if a franchise has three sequels, a tightened up remaster of the original, 19 movies, 5 specials, an OVA and a partridge in a pear tree, it seems like the makers kind of understand the "sequel" strategy.
Dragonball GT was the proof that when a company tries to extend a franchise past what is necessary the results can be very bad.
I'm not saying that there could be no good Dragonball sequel, I'm just saying that I prefer that someone else come up with an original idea and not try to copy Toriyama. Besides, I consider shows like Bleach and One Piece to be spiritual successors. The shonen action genre has more than enough shows to keep it going.
No
If I could get Toriyama's permission and collaborate with him then I would do another. I would set it in the timeframe of Dragon Ball GT: A Hero's Legacy and have basically the descendents of the beloved DBZ characters face new adventures, rivals, and enemies (and no, Pilaf would not randomly show up to fuck shit up).
I'd make it grittier and with less filler. And, if possible, more action.
I couldn't agree more
