OMG Shana is So Third Season

A new season of Shana and Haruka? Hmm!

That bastion of all (Japanese-language) things, 2ch, reports that Shakugan no Shana is due to get a new season. If you can call it that...the key phrase being issued is that the “Shana Project is Restarting,” and that a new anime is being developed.

I'm not sure if that kind of headline is just supposed to be a marketing ploy (hello, Haruhi!) or if it actually means they're doing some kind of revamp, AU, or otherwise atypical sequel project. I guess only time will tell!

Atypically, the announcement posted on 2ch also reports that a second season of Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu, the tale of a young man who learns that the perfect innocent idol of his school is actually a hardcore otaku, is also in the works.

I'm not especially a huge fan of either show, but I know a lot of others were-- which one are you more excited about?

Is there a reason for this disinterest in Shana, Gia?

I'll have to re-watch seasons one and two of Shakugan no Shana now to prepare for this! ^^

@Schwindelmagier: I watched the first ep of each season and just never felt particularly motivated to expend time or money to watch the rest. It's not like I thought it was bad, but I have to apportion my time and funds pretty carefully when it comes to anime...there's just too much out there for me to watch all of it, so I try to focus on series that really get me excited. :)

I'm also pretty picky when it comes to tsundere characters...I rarely like them. I can't stand Naru from Love Hina; not an Asuka fan either. I like Nagi from Hayate no Gotoku (otaku queen) and Louise from Zero no Tsukaima (bondage queen) okay, but Shana doesn't especially do it for me.

HELL YEA, Shana season 3

This could just simply be an ova anime series release causing it season 3 is jumping the gun. More Shana is going to be great I didn't really read much positive stuff about Nogizaku so I skipped it altogether and will continue to.

I like Shana, but I'd be happier with an alternate version with less focus on the high school romance love triangle aspect. A third season would be ok too, but I enjoyed the show more for the fantasy elements.

I thought Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu was fine as it was -- it didn't really need  a sequel.

O____O

I did a double take when scrolling through the articles here.

I really hope they mean a third season instead of a remake...I mean, the original show is already pretty darn good. It'd be REALLY hard to top it imho, and my word it would be awesome to finally see the later novels animated...

And Gia, I'm not going to say I was thinking the same thing, but when I first saw the first two episodes 2 years ago, I really couldn't have cared less for it. It struck me as basically another sort of almost Shounen-esque show with a little bit different concept. If myself from 1 year ago though met myself from 2 years ago however, I'd have punched myself in the face and said watch Gurren Lagann already and then do a marathon of Shana. If you ever do end up watching it, and for once in my life I'm actually tempted to buy an extra box set of a show if it meant you'd watch it since it actually wouldn't cost an arm and a leg, then I would like to say that it may not be an immensely groundbreaking show, but it definitely does give many very refreshing twists to create a solid series. It's still missing something to be a solid 10, but it's definitely got the qualities of a 9 on the MAL scale.

I would definitely say this was a show that suffered from protracted-intro-itus, but over time it really does get good. And Shana is arguably THE Kugimiya Rie character, and call her an annoying tsundere all you want, but she's undeniably the most reasonable of the three major ones (Shana, Nagi, Louise).

As for Nogizaka..... that was a C series..... it was good for filling time and had a great concept, but it was mostly moeblob fluff with little actual value. Nogizaka herself struck me as a slightly more intelligent Nagisa, though that doesn't say much. And when the younger sister character's B-rank antics are actually more amusing than the leads', that's not a good sign. The dad and his ninja squads were cool, but ultimately the show came off as a really cheap Seto no Hanayome knockoff with a different setting.

Kugimiya Rie is at her best when she is doing roles a bit different than the "big three" in my opinion. Taiga (Toradora), Alphonse (FMA), and Kagura (Gintama)are probably my favorite characters that she's done. That said, I'll check out Shana 3 as long as they don't start that horrid love triangle back up again. Yoshida is one of the most annoying characters in any series I've ever seen. Something about her just grates on my nerves. If they stick to the battles, some growth for Shana and Yuji, and some screentime for Margery and Marcho, it should be good times.

@HeeroYuy: I didn't call her an annoying tsundere. I called her a tsundere with no particular attraction to me. C'mon, I'm doing my best to be fair here. ;)

As much as I'd love to be able to give every series a full 5-6 episode shot at entertaining me, I just plain can't afford to...in any sense of the word! I'll also note that the people who are particularly evangelical about me watching Shana are usually not the people whose tastes tend to match my own, so while they of course were thoroughly entertained by the series and I would never blame them for wanting to share the love, I've yet to hear anything from anyone to really convince me that it's worth it for *me* to go back to it. :)

@Guet: I LOVE Kugimiya overall-- I love her in particular as Al in FMA, Mimi in Mnemosyne, Miharu in Nabari no Ou, Nena Trinity in Gundam 00, and the lone "classic tsundere" that I feel a really strong affinity for, Louise in Zero no Tsukaima.

I think the thing is-- there are really only a few types of tsundere characters (not including yandere and the like; I'm referring to like the Asuka/Naru type vs the Louise/Shana/Taiga type), and within those types the differences are primarily superficial (and I don't mean that as a negative thing). So of the type that Kugimiya is most famous for performing, I only like the ones with the superficial qualities that appeal to me: Louise as a bondage queen (and with a character design I love), Nagi as a smartass otaku, etc.

...Hm, I get the feeling that I'm going to be in trouble for saying that one. But really, while there are obviously differences between Louise, Shana, and Taiga, and even more so between Asuka and Naru, they are at their core very similar in how they react to things as tsundere characters.

@gia: Ah, well in that case it was my bad on interpreting. I understand like you've said before about the time constraint thing, that's why I made reference to the whole thing you said a while back on the IRC about how if I bought you [insert whatever the show was I was talking about at the time] on DVD then you'd consider it, though I completely understand the whole not having a lot of time to actually sit down and watch bit.

As for the character herself, I can see her not being everyone's flavor...she does seem sort of vanilla at times. I guess I was just confused before at how you said you liked Ms. BDSM queen Louise since at least for me I've always thought of her as an extreme version of Shana, though ultimately like you said it's all a matter of perspective and taste, so it makes sense - I'm just being a fanboy.

I can't wait!! I think season 3 will be the most exciting, and I believe there are more characters from light novel like Sophie, Rebecca, etc... Really, can't wait!! Can't wait for Shana & Yuji, and Margery & Marcho!

Dig Deeper into Shakugan no Shana

On his way home from school one day, Yuji Sakai's world freezes and a young girl wielding a large sword who informs him that he's actually already dead, but still existing in the world-- oddly enough. The girl sticks around to see what happens, and he names her after her sword: Shana.
