Oh, I'll Tell You Why We Can't Have Nice Things

No Big Windup Second Season for the US. !%#@%#

Okay, no, I didn't find enough time today to listen to this week's ANNcast (I barely find time to record our Squadcast! There are dozens of podcasts I want to listen to that I don't have time to!), but ANN's Zac Bertschy tipped me off that an interesting tidbit lies in wait in the show. The episode featured FUNimation's Adam Sheehan and Lance Heiskell: apparently Big Windup, which as you guys know was a big hit here at Vice, hasn't sold enough copies to warrant a licensing of the upcoming second season.

POO ON YOU. FIE. A PLAGUE O'ER ALL YOUR HOUSES. THAT REALLY SUCKS.

Now, I'm not going to blame this all on the downloaders. Yes, they enjoyed the media without supporting it financially, but let's face it: you meanie-heads who didn't believe me that it was awesome and didn't buy it are also to blame! "Bawwwww," you probably thought. "It's about basebaaaaaaaaaall. That's so laaaaaaaaaame."

 This is me. GOOD WORK EVERYONE.
 This is me. GOOD WORK EVERYONE.
Well, you were TOTALLY wrong, and now we'll all pay the price. Way to go. Excuse me, I'm going to sit in a corner and cry now. Maybe I'll come back later if you want to try to find a way to fix this.

MAYBE.

Big Windup actually surprised me a bit. I didn't think i'd be all that into it but i really like it. It's sad that we won't be seeing the second season licensed over here though. :(

I feel your pain for not being able to get a product that you really wanted. I really do sympathize with you there, but aren't you being a bit presumptuous that the lack of sales was directly due to online downloading? None of the online websites I go to even carry the show. Didn't seem there were even enough people there interested. It's hard enough to keep people interested in real baseball. Did Prince of Tennis do well in the U.S.?

You aren't the only person who has to deal with a company not making what you would really like to support. Just in my case, what is produced gives the people foolish enough to buy it a false sense of what the series is even about. With the passing of every few months and volume the likelihood that they may repair this damage becomes less and less. Thus the hole they are digging becomes deeper and deeper still.

@FoxxFireArt: Didn't I say...that I was *NOT* blaming it all on downloaders? *confused* That said, this piece is also supposed to read as over-the-top petulant, so I'd recommend against taking it too seriously :) (Though I do seriously like the show.)

@omo: MOST excellent!

@gia:
Yes, you did say that in the post, but the over all tone of the posting makes that comment read more sarcastic. Since you said they

" - enjoyed the media without supporting it financially, but let's face it: you meanie-heads who didn't believe me that it was awesome and didn't buy it are also to blame! "

It was the "also to blame" that made it appear you did blame them along with other factors.

@FoxxFireArt:
She was obviously writing it with tongue firmly in cheek, but it went way over your head.  Not too different when I wrote my own article on the FLCL rescue jabbing at the rabid fanbase that can't take a joke, which ended up making a lot people needlessly angry.

@HSaabedra:
It was the tongue in cheek manner is why I thought the statement was being sarcastic, and that she did blame them.

I LIKED BIG WINDUP.

I still hold out hope that they'll still take it on, just barter for a lower rights cost. I mean, they already have a cast lined up from season 1, and they already have a bunch of the research prepped/experienced team gathered.
giaon Jan. 8, 2010 at 9:55 a.m.
@FoxxFireArt: In all fairness: I'm definitely not on the boat that thinks that downloading is anime's one and only problem, and it's certainly had a lot of positive impact over the history of anime fandom in the US. However, it would be a bit silly of me not to realize that illicit downloading (without subsequent purchasing) has a negative impact on the market, as well, particularly these days.

@gia:
When used maliciously it can be bad. More often what I do with online manga and anime is use it to preview a series. More often it gets me excited for a series release on DVD or Volumes.

In some certain cases it's my only source.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I haven't seen the show or read the manga, but I've heard great things about it.
giaon Jan. 8, 2010 at 1:03 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: And I fully understand that. But that's where the arguments usually break down: most downloaders DON'T buy in the end, in my experience. But if you point that out to them, many will say that even if they weren't watching the series via download, they wouldn't buy the DVD, so technically there are no sales lost. *Technically* speaking, they may be correct (and if not, you can't prove that they'd buy a DVD in another situation)-- but I still feel like if I were downloading everything and watching it all the way through and not finding any way to purchase the media in question, I'd be violating the creators' rights to be compensated for their work.

It's a tough situation all around, and I do think that some downloaders might buy more than they think they would, if fansubs weren't freely available. But again, there's no way to prove it, really. Instead, you wind up with this weird situation where the *perceived* market (those who are "fans" of anime and manga) is larger than the *actual* market (those who *buy* anime and manga). But those people who are fans but don't buy DVDs still buy merchandise and convention passes and cosplay stuff...

Which makes it almost impossible to figure out how to market stuff! I mean, should they essentially give the media away with a big package of merch, sort of a la the Haruhi special edition releases? Obviously it doesn't work with every show, case in point Lucky Star, which they had to cancel the special edition releases...

This is why I think simulcasts like Crunchyroll's are really the way to go. Say what you will about Crunchyroll's past, but they've found a way to make the Japanese companies happy with their releases (so far, anyway), and also make the material available quickly and cheaply to American fans. So they can still go on and buy all that merchandise, while still supporting the production companies and whatnot by watching the shows legally.

Honestly, it doesn't matter to me whether it's Crunchyroll, FUNimation, VIZ, or even Bandai, Media Blasters, or Nozomi (who haven't jumped on the simulcast boat yet) doing the simulcast itself, but I think if we can get into a state where *most* anime is being simulcast or near-simulcast, we as an industry may be able to start turning things around.

...

Oops, I kinda went off topic there, didn't I? ^^;;
animeboy12on Jan. 8, 2010 at 1:30 p.m.
hmm.. I wonder though was this anime that popular with the streamers and downloaders to begin with? After it's not like it's the first sports anime to fail in America.

@gia:
I really can't speak to what others do, but my normal actions are normally I will check out a manga or anime series online. If I like a series I often want to collect it. I've read all the latest Negima! online, but I currently own ever Negima! volume out in the U.S. The translation work is superb. I like to be able to hold a book in my hands and take it where I want. I can't do that with my computer. There are other series I would like to do the same on....but that's another topic for another thread.

I checked out Crunchyroll. I was far from impressed with the selection of animes.

I've seen a few of the official simulcasted One Piece episodes, but I've been rather surprised when I've seen grammar mistakes in the subtitles. I'm not even completely sure where you catch the official simulcast.

I look at it sort of like watching shows on TV. I see if I enjoy a show on TV, and decide if I would want this on DVD. I'm normally not too fond of special edition DVDs if all they have are just collectibles. Only if they have content on the DVD. It's why I like the Lord of the Rings Extended Cut DVDs. Those have all the stuff cut for time added back to the movie. That's added content. The third movie in extended cut is 4hours and 25minutes without end credits.
Japan goes far more crazy for collectibles. As an anime and manga fan I have very little in the way of figures.

When it comes to shows. I prefer box sets. I hate buying one DVD at a time for it to only have three episodes on it. I understood why they had to do that on VHS. On DVD is seems like a rip off.

A sign of a good conversation is one that evolves. Otherwise things just go in circles.

Give me a hockey (ice or street in particular), lacrosse, rugby, bobsledding, snowboarding or association football (soccer) anime and than I'll check it out.

@Konanda:
You should really try Prince of Tennis, if you already haven't. It's a very good sports anime.

I guess their no shot of anyone picking up the rights to Taisho Yakyu Musume then.

@N15PCA: Well, not right now, but maybe later on :)

Guess this makes the likelihood of Cross Game being licensed dropping considering this and Big Windup are baseball-themed titles.

Tennis doesn't interest me though. For the most part I already don't like watching sports, I would rather be playing them and watching a fictional depection of someone playing sports is even more removed of a sport I already don't really enjoy so I'd say no. (the ones I listed are enjoyable sports)
