Ode to the Girls of Gradient Hair

I dunno what it is, but I just really dig this style.

I was talking to someone on Twitter earlier today and I mentioned how fond I often am of artists who use gradiented hair-- you know, one color at the top and another at the bottom? It can be a subtle difference (light blue to dark blue) or not-so-subtle (pink to blonde), but most of the time it still looks really cool.

So I thought I'd devote a little bit of time to some of my favorite gradient-hair girls, in hopes that you guys will do the same in the comments!

 Nene Kasugano

At first glance, I fell in love with Nene's design. Short, cute, and gradient hair in a perfect shade of teal-- looooved it. Then she opened her mouth and I cringed, but eventually even her shrill voice grew on me as she also turned out to be a total badass (and mild bondage fetishist-- at least, she trains herself a sub throughout the show). Beyond awesome and probably my favorite gradient hair to date. For the record, Ponyo contains several gradient-haired ladies, includine Nene, the titular Potemayo, and Pote's spiritual sibling Guchuko.

The Works of RyuMoto

I first stumbled upon Ryusuke Hamamoto at New York Comic Con, and quickly realized that he's the guy behind all that Petit Evangelion stuff. And a LOT of what he do features women with gradiented hair-- even his young female version of Alan Moore has gradient hair. I love it all-- it's vibrant and colorful without (necessarily) being cutesy.

I have never played Touhou in my life. I don't know any of the characters. I had to look this one up for this article. But her design, along with a couple of others, always stood out to me when I spotted art of her around, and it was partially because of her cool purple/blond gradient hair. I also totally dig her laceup dress, even if it kind of looks like a kind of skankier version of Suigintou's.

Of course, just because these are three who "canonically" have gradient hair doesn't mean they're the only ones who EVER have it...

Artist Credits:

1. Yoshinoryou
2. Rayno
4. Mikazuki Akira
5. Shibairo
7. Suishou Anzu

Got any favorite ladies (or just favorite art) that features gradient hair? Go ahead and share it here!

My favorite, off the top of my head is Galaxiaaaa Gorgeous! Sailor Galaxia from Sailor Moon. Then there's also Sheryl Nome from Macross Frontier and Nia from Gurren Lagann. :)

can't forget Sheryl from Macross Frontier

@Lan: @animeboy12: I don't know if I include Sheryl as "gradient" hair because the way she's animated is usually more like pink highlights rather than a smooth gradient.

See? It doesn't change shades at the end, it just gets darker-looking in the shade.

I know Miku doesn't naturally have gradient hair, but this is one of my favorite pics of her.
giaon Feb. 4, 2010 at 11:45 p.m.
@Sonata: Rawr! I found a couple of gradiented Miku pics when I was digging around :)

@gia: Were you just waiting for someone to bring up Sheryl so you could post that picture?

Gradient hair can be cool. If done right.

@Sigue: Yes.
...No, sadly. It's funnier that way, isn't it? I actually stared at all the Sheryl pics for about ten minutes before deciding on that one @_@
Lanon Feb. 5, 2010 at 10:13 a.m.
@gia: Well, I guess it depends on the picture because sometimes it looks as if it moves from blonde to pink, but others it's just blonde or pink. I'm still gonna stick her in this category because she's the Galactic Fairy who can damn well have gradient hair if she wants too. ;)

That's who I was thinking of. Yum.

@lanaswift: She was by far the most likeable character in Umisho :)
But i do have to say the pic i posted doesnt do her justice XD

These should do even though they are a bit ecchi.

Sometimes you just got to love hair.
transgojoboton Feb. 8, 2010 at 7:16 p.m.
Speaking of Sheryl Nome's hair, is there any other animated series that has a character with "airbrushed" color in her hair like her's? It's just something that really stood out for me and gave me a hard time trying to figure out how the Galactic Fairy's hair would translate to 'real-life'.
lanaswifton Feb. 9, 2010 at 12:34 p.m.
@transgojobot:  The best Sheryl wigs I've seen have basically taken a blonde wig and colored locks of it a light pink-- not too terribly different from the blonde but enough to stand out just a bit.
@Oneesama: She's blond with pink highlights.
