NYCC: FUNimation Liveblog

FUNimation at NYCC.

As always, Adam Sheehan is in charge of FUNimation's panel. They're starting with a little talk about anime and the economy and assures us that the company is doing well-- they're still about a third of the market, and we've got a handy chart that shows that they're mostly doing the same number of shows, and they're doing 17% more new products (as opposed to repackaging).

They are working more and more towards quick releases of shows per our demands, and the FUNimation video player is one of the company's major initiatives on that front. Romeo x Juliet is already live on the site subtitled before the DVDs are even out, for example. The video site is here.

Moving on to the usual trailers and stuff...you know, I never noticed that the official site for the Afro Samurai game is at the URL bloodisbeautiful.com. Huh! How...appropriate.

For those of you who've been waiting for KenIchi the Mightiest Disciple, the first part of the first season comes out March 10th. The complete series of Shigurui is due on streets on March 31st., regular DVD and on Blu-Ray. God, that show is violent. I mean, there are some violent anime out there, but this show kinda takes the cake. The blood-soaked, blood-covered, blood-frosted, blood-flavored cake. With blood on top.

Next up, D.Gray-Man! It screened earlier, and the first part of the first season is also due March 31st. Tokyo Majin part one is due April 24th (very near my birthday!)

Too many box sets for me to type all at once! Lots of suff, I'll see if I can get a press release or a list or something. Samurai 7 is coming on Blu-Ray on February 24th.

A special announceement, one we've already heard the basics of: Fullmetlal Alchemist's premium OVA collection. Coming out late summer of this year (maybe they'll have early coopies at Expo?).

Sgt. Frog: they changed a lot of stuff based on feedback for the test episode that went up; they're looking at all of the feedback very closely. More updates soon.

Jobs at FUNimation? None right now! They just laid people off. Yes, they'll try to get the second season of Fullmetal Alchemist. The "quickie" podcast has been put on hiatus until economy stuff boosts up a bit. They ARE going to start a whole new internship program.

SLAYERS: THey're going to try and get the original voice cast, for Eva too. We should see a cast list for Romeo x Juliet within the next month.

Remastering the original Dragonball? I know one of you asked about this-- yes, the license is exxpiring in 2010, but it currently looks like it's going to be a possibility.. That does NOT mean it has happened, but odds might be in your favor, Dragon Ball fans.

Another question you guys had, about the continuations of a bunch of Geneon rescues-- they're slightly lower priority right now as they continue to acquire new shows and work on the newly acquired older shows as well, but they almost always WANT to get those added seasons for shows like Shakugan no Shana, Zero no Tsukaima, etc.

I'd like to see the second half of Shana, as I enjoyed most of the first season. No rush, though.

I would have like to know (i know the convention is over) why FUNimation limits each box set to about 13 episodes.  There are 392 episodes listed of One Piece listed on Wikipedia, so that comes out to at least 30 box sets.  That takes up a lot of space and means a long long time before the series reaches where it is today.

On the other hand, I was pleased with the news on Slayers Revolution/Evolution-R, even though, (again) we'll have to wait 'til next year for the DVDs.   Slayers has long been one of my favorite series (yes I even liked season 3) but always felt dissatisfied with how the series concluded and the OAVs didn't do much to alleviate my disappointment.  Basically, I wanted closure, and the 3rd series ends by practically kicking off on another adventure.  Thankfully, Rev/Evo seems to continue from that point.
