NYCC: Bandai Liveblog

Bandai Entertainment at NYCC.

It's actually a few minutes before the Bandai panel starts, but I thought I'd get this started. I'm also officially betting that there will be questions about the recent Bandai Entertainment non-scandal (a bunch o fpeople made a big fuss over some goodbye twitters from employees who were laid off, for reasons completely mysterious to me).

And we're off! As always, the panel opens with talk of upcoming releases (which are not new announcements generally, so bear with me): Code Geass, Gurren Lagann, Gundam 00, Lucky Star (manga starts coming out in May! Really excited about that!), Ghost Slayers Ayashi which was delayed but is finally coming out this month (first volume in the next few weeks), Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence on Blu-Ray, Sword of the Stranger which really WAS up for Oscar consideration...but Kung Fu Panda got the spot, which is really sad...then comes Combat Butler Hayate, .hack//GU the movie (a cg movie version of the tv anime?).

Now we've got Anime Legends, starting with the long-awaited sola, originally licensed by Bandai Visual and now licensed by BEI after the latter absorbed the former, as was True Tears, both in July. Meanwhile Akira is coming out on February 24th, remastered on Blu-Ray.

Moving on to manga, Code Geass' three manga series continue on, and the light novel series has two volumes out currently. Gurren Lagann's first manga volume is coming in March, and volume two should hit during the summer. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (the manga based on the film, NOT the original novel) is also coming this April.

New manga announcement: Bandai has the license for the Gundam 00 manga, the company's first Gundam manga, and they'll also do the spinoff, Gundam 00F, and the light novel series too.

There's one more announcement, no visuals unfortunately...online distribution! They're streaming on YouTube starting with the first five episodes of Code Geass, which are already up. You can find it here. It's all dubs for now; Gundam 00 is also scheduled for the site. They're also considering Joost, and there'll be more announcements in the near future. UPDATE: I'm told that in spite of what wassaid in the panel, the YouTube channel has subs AND dubs. Rejoice!

First question is about Kurokami, which they're simultaneously releasing with Japan on TV right now-- how is it being dubbed, and why was there no episode this week? Not sure on the latter. Can they do a new G Gundam? He can pass the idea along, but he can't make it happen-- it's the Japanese equivalent of Star Wars in terms of how important the brand is.

The usual question: how is the economy affecting Bandai? Well, they just laid off a bunch of people, most of whom were brought back as contract workers. @_@

Let's see, there's probably not a lot of hope for the limited edition of Lucky Star 6. Alas! The Code Geass actors really love doing the sound episodes, especially because they don't have to worry about matching the animated mouths, giving them more freedom to play around, which is cool.

EDIT: did get a few additional bits from Napton before he scooted out-- Hayate is NOT going on TV most likely, and they ARE considering an Anime Legends release of original Gundam and other older Gundam titles. Also, once again-- they are NOT! releasing Byousoku 5cm.

The end! On to Yen Press...

I love Bandai's titles, and fo course these panels are designed for regular con-goers, not repeat visitors like myself...but I've seen all these trailers a dozen times or so now! ;) *waits for the announcements*

Nice to hear consideration of Anime Legends releases of other Gundam series. I really like the Anime Legends releases and Bandai Ent in general.

Psst, Gia! It's not all dubs on YouTube, it's subs AND dubs ;D

I didn't realize they were getting the Gundam 00 light novels as well as the manga. Thats pretty cool to hear, I hope they actually finish the novels..... unlike Tokyopop. Now if if they would only grab that first Drama CD as well...

Is it the ORIGINAL Gundam from long long ago? I remember seeing something like 3 vhs(s) and that was it!

That tends to be what is meant by original Gundam: The original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam. It's all out on 10 DVDs. Oddly though, it's dub only. Funny thing is that the DVD releases of the series compilation trilogy are sub only.

I really want to watch the original Mobile Suit Gundam, or better yet revisit it again
