Not All Best Buys Suck For Anime Now

Hey, cool! My Best Buy still has a lot of anime!

I know a lot of you have talked about how much less you'd be going to Best Buy once they had cut back on the amount of anime they carried, but in case you hadn't found yourself there and checked in on the anime section (or lack thereof) since the close-out sales back in March-- you might want to consider taking a peek.

I found myself at one of my local Best Buys-- the one at Cedar Hills Crossing, if there are any Oregonians reading this --to pick up a new car cell phone charger after I literally crushed mine to bits and pieces (I don't know my own strength?). While I was there I decided to take a peek in the anime section for a couple of things I wanted to pick up, prepared to be disappointed...which I was, at first. I didn't see ANY anime! I was expecting bad, but not THAT bad.

Then I thought, maybe there's just an “animation” section now. Or maybe it's mixed in with TV shows. Or, hell, maybe even a “foreign films” I kept wandering. Then I turned the last corner and, lo and behold! An anime section. A good-sized, well-stocked, neat and organized anime section, no less. And there was much rejoicing.

John Sirabella's comments about BB make it sound like they're still very much for anime, but are being more cautious about what they stock, which is why Strawberry Panic is going to be packaged in a "litebox" [thinner brick package] rather then just packaging the singles in a paperbox . Likewise, it's behind theirs and I'm assuming Bandai's rescheduling.

I had noticed that HMV's website wasn't listing all of Funi's titles each month, and seemed to have less stuff for discounts, but when I went in store recently, they just seemed to have rearranged stuff- no more artbox section [now if they have an artbox, it's stored outback and a space-saver advertising it is in it's place], but still lots of newer stuff, and some other mature animation mixed in [like Marvel and DC's recent OVA movies]. I guess it's less of a mass abandonment, more of a focus change.

Yeah the Best Buy near me has really good stock. I doubt I'll shop much there, as the only thing I've gotten there was Eva because it was $50. I usually shop online at Robert's Anime Corner Store or the local comic book/anime shop to support the small guy :)

It's all a matter of what Best Buy you go to.

If I recall from the original news postings when BB's announcement first went through, is that there would remain anime sections at all stores, but that the overwhelmingly majority of stores would only feature like the current top 20 sellers (I think that's both a combination of new and old releases, just whatever sells best). But that there'd still be around a couple hundred stores nationwide where past sales proved there was a good anime audience purchasing from that  store which will retain their anime sections in whole.

Note to all- If your bricknmortar store of choice doesn't carry an anime you want, see if they can do special orders. It's how I get most of my anime, and usually takes about as long as it does for an online retailer to ship it to you [about 2 weeks to a month or so, sometimes longer if it's an older title that might be out of stock at the distributor level, but hey, that happens online too :) ]. You might pay full price, but you save on shipping, so it generally evens out, and usually you only pay for it when it arrives.
