No Razzies, but No Oscars for Anime in '09 Either

Just got through the nominee list and I didn't see anything. Pout pout.

This year's Academy Award nominees have just been announced, and while you may find the list interesting-- TWO alien movies up for Best Picture? Yowza! --you will NOT find any anime-related items on the list.

She is NOT heading up to collect an award.

You may remember that the Studio Ghibli fantasy Ponyo was shortlisted for a nomination for Best Animated Feature, as was Imagi's adaptation of Astro Boy, but neither made it in that category, or any other-- I'm a bit disappointed that they couldn't even pull off an Art Direction nod or something along those lines. I didn't see anything on the Scientific and Technical awards, either, though I suppose that's to be expected.

Ah, well. Maybe next year. At least nothing scored a Razzie, either.

Only reason the one movie didn't get a Razzie is most likely due to the fact that it did so horribly that so few saw it that it wasn't even worth a Razzie.

I remember there was an online site that tried to interview people about their reaction to that Dragonball Evolution movie as they were leaving. One person they talked to was walking out part way. No one even showed up for the next showing.

Sadface but nothing compares to TGWLTT not getting a nomination a few years ago.

Although the Secret of Kells is a fantastic Irish/Belgian movie, w00t for nomination!

Wait the giant annual award shows actually have some kind of significance now?

When did this occur and who forgot to inform me?

Sorry Gia, prepare to bow down to your 19 foot tall, grotequely out of proportioned blue overlords.

@Zeouterlimits: As I recall it there was some complexity with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time's release-- it wasn't shown in theaters in L.A. county long enough to be eligible, or something like that. Sadly.

Avatar is going to win everything anyways.

Ponyo was very good.  It made me very sleepy and want  a bowl of hot soup though.  I think it was all the rain and crashing waves in the movie that did it.

@lanaswift: Yes I remember.
Complications included, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I just said WTF? when I saw the nominations. Poor Ponyo. Surely Ghibili's BFF's will win.

Thankfully it won't win best picture. I can 90% guarantee "The Hurt Locker" will win there.

Avatar was an OK movie (Not oscar winning feature tho), no plot, close to no characterization, and average acting, but totally worth it. The Hurt Locker, District 9, or Up will win Imo.

Dig Deeper into Ponyo

A Little Mermaid story, with the exception that in this version the mermaid is actually a goldfish named Ponyo
