New Code Geass Anime: Gaiden Boukoku no Akito

Word's out-- Sunrise is developing a new Code Geass project!

 Word comes from 2channel about what appears to be a brand new Code Geass project: Code Geass Gaiden: Boukoku no Akito (Akito of the Ruined Nation). It's set in atb 2017, seven years after the start of the original Code Geass series, so probably 5-6 years after the end of Lelouch's story, and unfortunately the world peace that was supposed to ensue didn't. Europe is in the midst of a big war-- and a small squadron of folks from Area 11 are on a mission that has only a 5% likelihood of success.

...At least, that's all we've got so far, plot wise. We also don't technically know for sure that it's an anime, but the reveal came in a trailer and all the credits they've got listed are people who work primarily in anime, excepting CLAMP, of course.

Yes, CLAMP will be back for character designs, as will Akira Yasuda for mechs-- or rather, Knightmare Frames. And of course, Ichirou Okouchi and Gorou Taniguchi, who came up with the original Code Geass story, will be back for this new piece.

There are a couple of newcomers to the franchise: One Shigeru Morita, who did scripts for Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and a variety of episodes of Blood+ and Toward the Terra, will be on screenplay duty for the new Geass. And Kazuki Akane, who's directed works like Vision of Escaflowne and Noein, will helm the new series.

That's everything we got so far, except for these rather uninspiring images.

 Nonetheless: hey, lookie, a new Code Geass anime! Who's dying to watch it and who's so done with the franchise?

Hmmm in a way this is good news because I liked the original series, but in another I felt the original series was one of those few anime out there that actually had a real ending so I am sort of miffed by the concept of a new season.  If they try to make it honestly separate from the first two seasons I guess it won't be too bad but I sort of see them keeping Zero, Kallen, etc etc in it.....  I guess we will have to wait and see and pray it doesn't become a mere cash in.

It looks like it's just set in the same universe with a brand new cast.

I'm not sure how I feel about that. That Lelouch's epic sacrifice fell to nothing. I feel it kind of diminishes that moment.

I would of been happier if this was more like the variety of Gundam series that never connect to the other.

I'd really hate it if Gino was in it. I really didn't like that character. Which is why I killed him off in my Code Geass R2 4koma.

Here are some images from one of my Japanese anime sources. These are images from the Picture Drama (still images accompanied by voice acting from the cast) included in this Blu-ray DVD.

The GUREN has a DRILL???!!

We know Nunnally and Tian Zi, but who is this little blond sitting among the three? Why is it all these nations are led by prepubecent girls?  The Loli truely rule the world.

I hope  SPOILER WARNING: Click here to reveal hidden content. His tale ended perfectly imo.

I could see this being good.  Hopefully C.C. and Suzaku will be important characters in this.
Oishi_47on April 22, 2010 at 9:17 a.m.
I did like Code Geass as one of those anime with a real ending. I purchased some of the manga based on it, and lets just say that I hope this isn't a new one of those.
daotherkenjion April 22, 2010 at 9:42 a.m.
I hope they can come up with a moving story. They are moving to Europe with this story and thats good since they didnt really say what was going on over in that part of the world. Maybe this has something to do with the effect of what happened to lelouch spreading over the world and that the world is still transforming into what he had in mind but it hit a snag in that place and needs a new hero to push along these ideals. Lelouch did what all good governments do learn from the past, give people a purpose in the present, and a hope for the future. And I really hope whoever the hero is does not get the shin asuska treatment and get overshadowed by the old cast.

I really enjoyed the series and I think that it ended well. Personally, I would prefer if the new series followed C.C. into a completely different setting, and had her give some new character a geass.

I don't know if I like this. I mean Code Geass is one of my favorite shows ever, but it's ending was a real END and I feel like this would just make everything I love the kind of master piece-ish first and second season seem unimportant and the big sacrifice in vain.

That's....not right.

People are getting way too confused over something so simple. Let's make things clear:

R2=2018

R1=2017

NEW Code Geass Gaiden=2017

This doesn't take place after R2.

The only thing that takes place "after R2" is the Picture Drama that comes with that Kiseki's birthday disc.  This is what FoxxFire posted.

But don't confuse that with the trailer for the Gaiden. They're two completely different things and mixing them up helps no one.

Sigh, hopefully with Kazuki working on this project it will be better than the train wreck that was Code Geass r2.
HawkofLighton April 22, 2010 at 12:09 p.m.
So, if Gaiden takes place durring the same time as R1, than this may turn out to be a half assed side story. That would be pretty bad.
Kusajaon April 22, 2010 at 12:16 p.m.
@Burntlettuce:

Maybe,  though I think Taniguchi is still a good director in spite of all the problems with R2, but it'll probably be better by virtue of the fact that R2 went through unexpected changes after being moved to another time slot between seasons. I don't think that's easy to handle when you need to re-adapt your show to fit another audience.

If you don't have to face a messy production or any such issues, things should go smoother. Imagine this Gaiden won't run into the same problems.

@FoxxFireArt: On the one hand, I know how you feel-- I thought the same thing, about how things didn't go the way Lelouch wanted, apparently.

On the other hand, realistically, humanity will always get itself into more fights -_-
FoxxFireArt moderator on April 22, 2010 at 1:13 p.m.
@gia:
Well, the way the series ended was just epic. It was an emotional and defining moment in over all anime history. The hero fooled the world and gave his life to make it all a better place. Making himself the villain and only a small handful know the truth.
Few animes can illicit an emotional reaction. Having it all come to nothing diminishes that. This is a story. Not reality.

I really think those Picture Drama images might have some clues about the new series. Seeing how there is that blond girl that I don't think has ever appeared before.
KiraIsLon April 22, 2010 at 1:25 p.m.
Great another one. *sigh*
Sigueon April 22, 2010 at 1:25 p.m.
Escaflowne and Noein, eh? Should be interesting... My hope is that they can recapture the feel of the first half of the first season of Code Geass. I expect they won't bother, though, since the crazy hijinks of the second half of Code Geass and R2 were so popular...
sotyfan16on April 22, 2010 at 2:24 p.m.

I will watch this for the sake of it being Code Geass. But for me you cannot replace what has already happened. I know that the world always falls into more chaos but anime have the ability to ascend from such human matters and give people a glorious ending, be it good or bad. I can't get enough Nightmare Frames and Kallen though so I could put up with it. However, if the story isn't epic then I'll give this a thumbs down.

Ragnorakon April 22, 2010 at 3:08 p.m.
I'll watch it, I'm happy that it takes place in the same universe but with a different cast, that means that we won't have to deal with the same characters and something new is coming to the story, but at the same time the series did end with R2, for me at least
GrandMarshalon April 22, 2010 at 5:59 p.m.
Unless theres more C.C im not interested
