Nerd Church: The Elfen Lied Mass

Sweet deal!

From Perez Start comes this unique vieo-- Elfen Lied's opening song Lilium, a beautiful piece, was played by a Mr. David Tidyman (...?) at the St. Angela Merici church's Sunday mass yesterday.

Some clever parishioner caught the organ performance on video and posted it to YouTube, and now we can all benefit, because it's beautifully done.

You can tell a few people in the church recognized the tune because they chuckled. I wonder whose idea it was? Perhaps Tidyman himself is the Catholic otaku? Either way, I would totally go to a church that used the occasional anime theme in its rituals.

...Or just gorgeous music in general. I'm a sucker for a good classical-style piece.

Anyway, let's take a quick survey. Any of you Vice Squad members regular religious rite attendees (or, for that matter, executors)? What denomination?

That's kind of funny to think about. Still, I don't attend church. I'm agnostic.

Perfunctorily atheist, but I do love a nice organ piece.

Catholic here. I'd thought about how cool that would be if someone were to do it before, but I never thought anyone would actually do it during Mass...

Now if only someone would play a good Yuki Kajiura piece (a lot of them seem like they'd fit pretty well), that would seal it for me.

My idea of "Sunday Service" is the nice young lady who brings me my beer while I watch football down at the local sports bar.

Was this piece originally created for Elfen Lied?  I've sold the DVD, so I can't look up the credits.

I know that, in the title sequence, there are paintings by someone famous...  I wish I could remember who...  Pretty sure it was an Italian painter of some sort...  Probably renaissance.

My point is, that title sequence has a very European influence, so perhaps this organ piece isn't precisely Elfen Lied's.

Amending my last comment:  Yes, I researched it and found out that it is an original piece created for the anime.  The lyrics, albeit, are latin phrases taken from the bible.

@Arjuna: Not the first nor the last like that. Actually Diva's Song from Blood+ is apparently completely random latin phrases. Shame, too, that'd make it harder to sing-- it's a gorgeous piece. I would love to hear someone sing it live someday.

@lanaswift: Well, since we're on the topic of good anime music...  :)  I'll take this opportunity to mention Naruto.

I really enjoyed Naruto's music, especially "Sadness and Sorrow"; a song that was used often throughout the series during the sad moments.   I play piano, and the transcribed version of this song is very popular amongst youtube piano players.  I used to know it, but I'm sure I've forgotten by now.  It's very simple to play, and there are many versions.

@Arjuna: Naruto has some pretty good music, but one soundtrack that I wish was a little more celebrated is the anime Ghost Hunt. It's pretty mediocre in every other imaginable way, but there's some beautiful music on the OST, which was composed by Toshio Masuda (who also did some stuff for the original Naruto series, Mushishi, etc).

You know, if my church would do this every once in a while, I might actually go.
