NARUTO Ch. 682 Review

I'm confused now. Should I no longer be taking this story seriously??

Go home, Kishimoto. You're drunk.
Go home, Kishimoto. You're drunk.

With the fate of the world in the balance, Naruto decides to bet everything on THAT justu to win. It doesn't go well -- in every sense of the word.

The Good

Once we get past an astoundingly idiotic opening that literally makes me embarrassed for all involved -- from the creator, publisher, staff, and all the way to the readers who have to endure it --, the action picks up to have a pretty exciting battle.Kaguya is a powerful opponent that can create dimensions on a whim. However, her abilities are so impressive that it's confusing how she hasn't defeated Naruto and Sasuke yet. All she ever seems to do is counter and evade. Let's see the lady get more proactive.

The Bad

Kishimoto just sucker punched the audience with this moves.
Kishimoto just sucker punched the audience with this moves.

Last week when Naruto and Sasuke were putting their faith in "that" jutsu, I honestly thought this was going to maybe be the thing Hashirama gave Sasuke earlier or something the Sage of Six Paths taught them. I'll certainly admit this. I really didn't see this coming **he said in a sullen tone**.

We are coming ever closer to hitting the four year mark of this war "saga". As a writer with as much experience as Kishimoto must have gained, he should know better than try to pull something like this. He seems to want me to think of Kaguya has the ultimate in evil for this world, a vengeful god among humans to be taken deadly serious. Yet at the same time he honestly expects be the believe that she could be shocked by a bish┼Źnen gag? You have got to be effin' kidding me!

This sort of thing can't be undone. Now that I know that she's vulnerable to something so stupid, I can't take her seriously anymore. She's been diminished. Having this at the beginning of the chapter undermines much of the following events that are far more interesting. This sort of humor is best kept in the ROCK LEE Spin-Off series and not artificially shoe-horned into canon plot line.

Verdict 2/5

Any responsible editor should have made sure that ham-handed attempt at comedy had hit the cutting room floor. I honestly believe that Kishimoto is attempting to break some sort of record for the longest war arc in manga history, and he's needlessly stretching events out in the practice of reaching that goal. This war officially began some time in the later months of 2010, and we've just started crossing the half way point of 2014. The problem is that this arc should have concluded years ago. My patience has worn well past thin and into the realm of nonexistent. Extending things with such a poor taste in humor does little to improve my mood with this series.

I would have seriously considered rating this issue at least a 3 out of 5 or higher if that embarrassment hadn't wasted valuable time and pages. The only reason I'm even giving it a 2 is that events actually started to get interesting about half way through. I could have gone far lower. As a writer, you can't tell the audience that time is short then spend so much of it messing around on bad jokes.

I laugh at that joke, but then I become sad

This was so out of place, Naruto have never use that jutsu in a real fight before

Lurkeroon July 3, 2014 at 7:05 p.m.

Wow, I took a long break from Naruto and I see that this is where the series is now. I am definitely waiting for this arc to conclude before reading any more of the manga now.

I am still hoping for my fantasy to come true. Shino has been working behind the scenes this whole time and planted bugs in all the relevant places he needs to win the war. Shino will ultimately win the war.

taichokageon July 3, 2014 at 7:08 p.m.
I must say I was disappointed. But I will muster through as I've been with Naruto for so long and it's nearly at its end.
zaldaron July 3, 2014 at 8:23 p.m.

Um wait...you were ever taken a shonen manga "seriously"? This isn't from the new world hear. /sarcasm mode off.

Likely done simply for humor and to show Naruto is still sometimes a child. Bad decision? Possibly. Surprising...not so much.

Jinbeifan1on July 4, 2014 at 12:37 a.m.

@taichokage: Same here, although honestly most of the reason I still read it is because it's next to the One Piece chapter each week they're updated, same for Bleach :P

This "joke" killed it for many readers, including me. I started doubting Kishimoto's skills as a writer a long time ago, but this is down-right madness. it's like he was never a writer to begin with.

I find these comments a little surprising. I was in a conversation about these events last Saturday with a large group of people and most of them loved this chapter; i watch the anime so i don't have an opinion on the matter and was mostly spectating (and trying to avoid all the spoilers) but the majority loved the unpredictability of it all, that it came out of nowhere.

More importantly, they said it broke the serious tone that had persisted in the series for a long while now and created one of the few lighthearted moments in the manga; a few spoke of the use of the jutsu harking back to Naruto part 1, where the series utilized more humorous elements.

Personally i think i will like it when i finally get to it; it sounds like the sort of funny naruto shenanigans i would enjoy; besides their is logic to it. As a shinobi, faced with a dangerous threat, you have to use everything in your arsenal to survive. Pulling off something like this is no difference from throwing a smoke bomb or something similar.

Halberdierv2on July 4, 2014 at 7:25 a.m.

@katmic: i kind of agree.kishimoto put himself in a hole by keeping the world war arc going on for about as long as World War 1, but still tried to stick in a funny moment in the battle. and as oddball as it seems, it works perfectly fine as intended, since that is probably the LAST technique your opponent would expect to have used on them, and distracted them. She isn't any more weak to it as any other female would be on the aspect of surprise from the jutsu.

jj_jacksonon July 4, 2014 at 8:14 a.m.

i think you guys are being way to hard on this chapter..actually i think for the past year you've been way too hard on the series as a whole in these reviews. i mean granted i do feel similar to you guys in cases to the not so good plot twist and a final enemy that kinda just..doesn't fit the profile. but its still been mildly enjoyable.

Destinyheroknighton July 4, 2014 at 11:41 a.m.

@katmic: @Halberdierv2:

But, Naruto haven't throw everything at her yet. This pretty much close to the beginning of the fight, if this happen later on, I would have forgiven it. Also, Naruto didn't use this jutsu on Madara or Tobi or Pain, those guys push him to the limit. Kaguya still need to be built up as a villain, I still not buying that she the main villain. Especially, she is being ordered by her henchmen and falling for that jutsu, that really hit the nail in her coffin for me. She need the built up as a villain, not have a comedy act right now

This chapter feel like watching the Undertaker losing the streak at Wrestlemania to Brock Lesnar, it was surprising when it happen but later on it just feel empty, because their was little to no built up

LordTerminalon July 4, 2014 at 2:07 p.m.

I'll ask again, can we please petition the people in charge of the anime to just ignore the rest of this arc and make up their own ending at this point?

Say what you will of the anime filler episodes but I'm positive the writing staff behind those can come up with a better ending to this series than anything Kishimoto has done recently.

You keep talking about Kaguya not being built up. Here is the thing. The manga isn't over yet. It's like complaining that Madara is not built up well enough two chapters after he was first introduced. You keep the assuming that Kishimoto isn't going to develop her further.

There is still some time left in the year. I am pretty certain Kishimoto knows what he is doing. These chapters should be taken as they are, individually, considering what happened before but not assuming you know what is going to happen in the future. You can't know what Kishimoto has planned for Kaguya. personally i think he is going to do one more, very short arc, after this.

The way i see it, all the complaints i here about this arc revolve around people not seeing what they want. First it was the sasuke/naruto fight not happening, and from then on other complaints about 'all these things we have been waiting to see' not happening. But here is the thing. If all those things everyone wanted from Naruto had actually happened. I wouldn't be a naruto fan. Because that would be too predictable. I was impressed when it started to become clear that the naruto sasuke fight wouldn't happen, and when their was no big confrontation between naruto and sasuke where naruto convinced him to come back to the village. Those are the events kishimoto convinced us would happen for over 500 chapters and suddenly things veered off course.

This is what makes a good manga, one that twists and turns. If things were happening in naruto just the way you expected them to, then why bother reading naruto. This is why i struggle with fairy tail these days, because i does exactly what i expect it to do.

Kishimoto has had this story planned out to the end for years so, we just have to see where he plans to go with this.

I disagree. First naruto filler is some of the worst ever (though not as bad as bleach filler), minus the kakashi arc, which was pretty good. secondly i like where this arc has been going so far, which basically took the naruto manga we all knew and loved and flipped it on its head at a point when it was on the verge of seeming repetitive. too many long running manga stagnate. I am one of the many people that is yet to be dissapointed by naruto (except for maybe one or two things which are irrelevant to the story)

At the very least these chapters avoid Bleach's very slow pace

Destinyheroknighton July 5, 2014 at 11:47 a.m.

@katmic:

Madara was built up through out shippuden, he was foreshadow from the beginning. Kaguya wasn't their from the beginning, she just appear in this arc. Their was zero foreshadowing to her before this arc happen. This war have been dragging on, it to late in the game to bring in more characters.

I loss my fate with Kishimoto, a long time ago. He still haven't recover from the Pain Arc, I still mad at the Pain thing (and that was two hundred chapters ago). And I still upset with the Toby twist, and Sakura character, so he won't wow me with any time soon. Also, I still angry at Naruto for being the chosen one. It go against everything he was, Neji was right all along. Their no free will and you can't go against your destiny. My interest to Naruto is at it all time low, Kishimoto have to do something really awesome to bring it back up.

No, I not complaining about the Sasuke vs Naruto or it being to unpredictable. I complaining, it becoming boring, and the twist feel empty. When I think about the twist it fall apart. Throwing in random stuff doesn't make things good. It feel like a chore going through the chapter every week and I do sometime go back and reread from the volumes and I still feel the same way. It is like Undertaker losing his streak

I glad, you still like Naruto. But it simply not for me anymore, the bad outweigh the good. I will keep reading it because it usually right before the other Jump titles I enjoy and I a fast reader. My enjoyment of it have long past

Fairy Tail, is in the same boat as Naruto for different reasons. I do hope they bounce back like what Bleach did, it might be dragging but it entertaining every week. That what I want from my Shonens, to be entertaining

I would like to believe that

Toxin45on July 5, 2014 at 5:02 p.m.

@Destinyheroknight: Well she was the Ten-Tails.

Destinyheroknighton July 5, 2014 at 7:55 p.m.

@Toxin45:

Sigh, I have a problem with that. But I do want to go into it, it just will turn on my ranting button.

I'll just keep it like this, I know she was and I have a problem with it
