NARUTO Ch. 665 Review -- AV MOD MATERIAL

In the grand Kishimoto tradition, Obito becomes a born again good guy.

Either he meant to do that, or his depth perception is way off for a hand shake.
Either he meant to do that, or his depth perception is way off for a hand shake.

Overconfidence in his abilities may very well prove to be Madara's undoing. No longer willing to play his part, Obito finally cuts the last string of the puppet master who would be god.

The Good

Hello, dying hero here with a person's hand in his chest.
Hello, dying hero here with a person's hand in his chest.

I quite literally started writing this review with my head down, fingers to my forehead, as I tried desperately to both think of something positive to say about this chapter, and come up with a new analogy for describing it as "drawn out". Unfortunately, the English language has failed me in that regard.

Well, best part of the chapter is that there was some pretty impressive action. Enjoy it while it lasts. It only makes up for three pages out of the seventeen.

The Bad

This might sound heroic if it wasn't GROSSLY hypocritical.
This might sound heroic if it wasn't GROSSLY hypocritical.

So, has Kishimoto forgotten that Naruto currently is undergoing "open heart" surgery? Sakura still has her arm half buried in inside his chest. It is the ultimate in last second acts of desperation. Does this sound like the time for a history lesson or to get all introspective about the aggressive heart of humanity? This attempt of trying to redeem Obito in the eleventh-and-a-half hour is astoundingly ham-handed.

True, the idea that the power of chakra was abused by humanity is interesting on some level, but this is not even remotely the time for such an extended history class. Then, after Madara avoids all these advanced attacks, Obito is able to just punch him straight in the gut with no trouble. All while taking a complete 180 in character. Why couldn't he have just stayed the Dark-Naruto who believed in his path just as much as Naruto believed in his own? Who knows what this character truly believes in anymore?

Verdict 1/5

As this arc just seems to go on without an end, I start to ponder if one day down the line we're going to hear some behind the scenes story of how this all went off the rails. I can only speak to my experiences, but I'm honestly curious how this is going over in Japan and the larger fan community. Am I the only one who's really bothered by all of this? Is it just my taste that's off, and everyone else is loving this stuff?

This series used to be sooo much better. The action was thrilling, and the villains were wickedly fun. I don't enjoy coming down on this series as hard as I am. Things were even looking up a few weeks ago. I just feel lost in this never ending cycle of needless expositioning and monologing that are punctuated by a few bits of action. Until next week's edition, hope unjustifiably springs eternal.

OH NO i'm bothered..obito has been the main bad guy for soo long and then to turn it around because what he got beaten? hes the reason why neji is dead, konan, his parents are dead like..man they guy is way past redeming in my book.

He wouldve been an more effective bad guy if he stuck to his guns.

And dont get me started on madara..he has no substance as a character to me and he just wont'/can't die..

Naruto used to makeme excited every week to read now its more like ehhhh..

How can Tobi hurt Madara? He is half dead (he should have die three times already)

I did like Madara's speech, but it was out of place

The other thing I like was Madara cutting Minato's Rasengan arm off and throwing at Kakashi. That just look funny

Also, where did Minato get Sage Mode? And why he never use it until now? (it would have been handle when he was fighting tobi)

Even Megatron had to team up with optimus prime at some point.

The thing is... I can see what Kishimoto's trying to do here. I mean... I think he is failing miserably but I can see what he's trying to do and I do like what he's trying to do. I like the whole "no, a Hokage should be the one who walks the harder path" and everything, I love that shit, Naruto is a hero, and heroes should act like that. He's the good guy and everything. And I kind of see Obito changing back to the good side because of that, 'cause he has been just Madara's puppet until now but he's not anymore. Kind of what Darth Vader did at the end of The Return of the Jedi, he didn't killed the Emperor just because he was killing his son (of course that was one of the reasons he did it) but also because he saw that his own son stood up and resisted where he failed years ago.

Kishimoto's trying the same thing with Obito here. But, then again, in my opinion he is failing. This is coming way too late and feels way too rushed to be good. Also... after Sasuke became good again (and he shouldn't have, at least not yet) everything else started to feel flat and rushed and shitty.

So even if I like the ideas Kishimoto is trying to pull on Naruto (not the character, the series) I'm not liking how he's doing them. But that being said, this chapter wasn't a 1/5 to me, it was like a 2 or a 3.

(hope my english is at least understandable)

@tximinoman:

I stand by my rating because everything about the chapter is unbalanced and poor. Other than a short fight scene, there was nothing entertaining about this issue. It's just a bunch of people talking in circles. Not only should Naruto be dead because they're taking too long, but how could a nearly dead Obito possible have the strength to pierce Madara with his bare hand. A Madara who has been nearly untouchable this entire story, and has the power of the Ten-Tails. He sealed all the Biju in seconds, evades attacks from two hokage level ninja, but falls for a sucker punch to the gut?

Obito also doesn't get a pass. He's killed thousands of innocent people. You can hardly call him a puppet when he's been doing most of this on his own for the past 20 some years. Vader was living under then thumb of the Emperor the entire time. Kishimoto has been building him to be this ultimate evil for almost the entire series. Now, he wants us to think he's a good guy suddenly.

Also, does this series have any actual villains left? All of them keep turning. That's alright to do sometimes, but Kishimoto does it constantly. This is far too late in the series to be doing that.

Obito is Vader dude.

Both became bad when their love interest died (or, in Vader's case, was going to die) and they turned evil because a mentor-like figure told them that with enough power they might be able to save them. Both betrayed their friends, Obito attacked Konoha and killed Minato and Vader killed every single Jedi. Also, both were bad for about twenty years (sure The Emperor's presence was more "active" in Vader's life than Madara was in Obito's but I didn't saw the Emperor when Vader decided to blow up a planet just to torture his own daughter) and in their stories his mentor-like figure reappeared out of nowhere and became the main villain just because (Vader was the main villain of SW universe the first two movies, he even asked Luke to join him so they could kill the emperor and rule the galaxy as father and son). And, if that weren't enough coincidences, both became good again after they saw someone with way more principles stand up where they had failed.

George Lucas built Vader the same way Kishimoto has tried to build Obito. Of course Kishimoto has failed, no one's denying that, but my point is that I can see what he's trying to do, and I do like what he's trying to do. I love heroes like Naruto and I can understand why Obito's changing sides now, even if I think it's too late.

Also, I agree with you that every single villain turning good in Naruto sucks. As I said in my previous comment, I stoped caring about Naruto after Sasuke became good for no reason. Because I can understand Obito becoming good again but Sasuke was Naruto's biggest and deepest failure. He hasn't forgive himself that he was weak enough and couldn't stop his friend so his last fight should be against Sasuke. Succedeing where he failed before and all that shit.

But no, Kishimoto decided for no reason that Sasuke needed to become good again.

(as I said in my previous comment, I hope my english is at least understandable)
