More Than a Laugh: Girls Bravo Episode 1

Sure it's dumb, but that doesn't mean it can't be funny.

We all have shows we call a guilty pleasure. Some have Code Geass and others have, say, Heaven’s Lost Property. Given my wide viewership, the series at hand is one of mine. I enjoy Girls Bravo for what it is-a silly fanservice ride. For those who don’t know or need a refresher, let me enlighten you.

For lack of a better image that isn't highly sexual, I give you swimsuits.

Now, some of you must be like, “What the hell is wrong with you to enjoy this? Are you high?” My answer is no. In fact, this was one of the first harem anime I ever saw back in 2008 when I started my otakudom. Granted, it’s certainly not the best but it’s not the worst either.

This show does something a little different; albeit obvious depending on your knowledge of harem protagonists, by have the lead male,Yukinari Sasaki (voiced by Yuri Lowenthal who is known for Sasuke from Naruto), break out in a rash from an allergic reaction to girls. This spawns from the mental and physical abuse he’s gotten from girls throughout his life. And guess who his childhood friend is. You got it-a large-breasted tsundere named Kirie. Despite how I enjoy girls being bravo (“bravo” to me seems to be another word for silly, or maybe naked (not a literal translation but with what the show is)) Yukinari is my absolute least favorite harem protagonist and I could almost stick him as my Number 2 least favorite of all (right behind that ***** Shinji).

Anyway, on to what I find funny. The bulk of this episode takes place on the invisible planet of Siren which orbits the Earth and can only be gotten to by magic portals. The kicker with the planet is only a small percentage of the inhabitants are male so women fight over them (even the little girls!). Needless to say, Yukinari gets transported there by a pink-haired and very well endowed girl named Miharu (voiced by Michelle Ruff who is known for her role as Rukia from Bleach), who he happens to not be allergic to. Weird pink smoke explosions happen as they are chased by hordes of women across the city, resulting in Yukinari enduring more punishment than is necessary. Also, Kirie kicks him twice and both times he is able to see “everything”.

"Kill me now"
"Kill me now"

I know somebody is going to ask why I didn’t pick a later episode where one of the most perverted characters I’ve seen makes his entrance (Kazuhara Fukuyama). While he does cause most of the laughs I get from the show, I can’t deny that the first episode is where it all started. So there y’all go. Girls Bravo is a dumb and lightly animated show but if you love to turn off your brain and enjoy loads of fanservice, pervertedness (inappropriate banana usage anyone?), and slapstick then this is one to look at. Lastly, I'm still amazed at the voice talent for the English dub considering their track record nowadays. Then again, this show came to the US in like 2004 and you have to start somewhere, right?

Is Girls Bravo too bad for you Vicers to bear? Is it your guilty pleasure, too? Do you want to know why I spent the oddly fitting price of $69 on this series? For the answer to that last one check out Dunce Cap: Mommy, I’m Allergic to Big Breasts.

You can see what I'm talking about by seeing the episode "Bravo from the Bathtub!" below. Age restriction on the video so YouTube log-in along with being 18 years old (I think) is required.

It's like me and my obsession with Togainu No Chi... except TnC is far from funny. XD
I saw the first episode with one of my friends about a month or two ago. We couldn't stop laughing. :3

My Girls Bravo DVD cost only $10 at a yard sale :)

The only reason I like this show is because of Kazuhara (he so funny)

@Destinyheroknight: Same here. I couldn't stop laughing. Kazuhara is f'ing hilarious!

Never gave the anime a try, but I did try the manga upon a recommendation from a friend. I found it to be mostly enjoyable, but something about it kept annoying me to the point that I stopped reading after the 12th chapter.

You say this was your first Harem? Hrm, very interesting...

It seems that people in general have a soft spot for their first harem show. Mine was Love Hina, which I hold in relatively high regard (and haven't liked one since, though other shows with Harem elements I haven't minded). One friend swears by Omamori Himari, and again, hasn't found one to hold his favor in the meantime. I wonder if that's just one of those things.

Disagree it is dumb and that pretty much makes it not funny. Stoner movies are not funny...unless you are a stoner and then you need to actually get a job and start contributing to society.

This show is amazing watch it all... now!

I said it was one of the first. I can't remember what the first harem I saw was when I started really watching anime but technically it would be Tenchi Muyo back in the Toonami days.

I saw Omamori Himari and it was funny but usual harem antics. I'm in the middle of reading Vol. 1-3 of the manga and feels about the same but I'm waiting for the story to pick up. If you want harems with story then look into Heaven's Lost Property and Sekirei. I've been reading and watching Sekirei and am going to start Heaven's Lost Property's manga.

I enjoy some, not all, stoner comedies and I'm a functioning and working non-stoner member of the society that I don't care about. But I didn't count on you caring about this.

zaldaron Dec. 7, 2011 at 6:17 p.m.

I don't know enough about you to judge whether you are a function member or not, I hope you are though my perceptions would be that you are not. Still sorry to see you don't care about the society. Our capitalist nature is what makes me care about it. Glad to know you are not a stoner though as a teacher I have seen what weed does to people and it isn't pretty.

I've seen about three what I would call stoner comedies two cheech movies and a bill and ted movie and I really didn't like either of them (though bill and ted came close to being enjoyable and was funny in a couple places).

It's not that I don't care just that I disagree with your perspective greatly..I mean I don't know you enough to hate you, though honestly if I had kids I would feel a little worried about leaving them with you *shrug* but then I would feel the same about many people who watch anime....unless I knew them very well.

I think my first harem anime was Tenchi Muyo on Toonami. When I came home from middle school and by the time I finish homework, I watched Tenchi Muyo every day at 6PM. I never knew what a harem until high school and that Toonami censored some of the scenes in Tenchi Muyo. On the International Channel, I saw the first anime boobies. I think it was Ryoko in that Hot Springs episode when Ryoko and Ayaka just strip each other. I never knew those bikinis were painted on them or got suspicious at Toonami.

As for Girls Bravo, I never heard or watch it. All I know is that Tenchi is a better looking guy (and stronger) than Yukinari.

Dig Deeper into Girls Bravo

A scrawny young boy, Yukinari Sasaki, spent his life bullied by girls and is now allergic to their touch. Through magic he finds himself on a world where men are a fraction of the population. Where he meets the one girl he's not allergic to.
