More Manga Awards: Shogakukan Edition

More manga to keep an eye out for licenses!

There are a lot of manga awards out there, some more prestigious than others. The Manga Taishou awards were just announced, and now Shogakukan follows up with its own Manga Awards. These awards generally go to Shogakukan titles (though this year there's one from partner Shueisha as well), but when a company publishes that much manga, it doesn't seem like such a bad idea to pick out the top titles!

This year's winners are:

 Penguin no Mondai
 Penguin no Mondai
Penguin no Mondai (A Penguin's Troubles), by Yuuji Nagai ( Shogakukan)
A cute and weird series revolving around the misadventures of a cute t-shirt wearing, hamburger-eating penguin named Beckham, if you can believe it.

 Sket Dance
 Sket Dance
Sket Dance, by Kenta Shinohara ( Shueisha)
Don't let the Bleach-like logo fool you: Sket Dance is about a group of high school kids known as "Sket Dan," who start their own high school club around helping people out. Our heroes are Himeko, a fiery redheaded former-delinquent who favors cute things and weird food, "Switch," a nerd who speaks via computer a la Stephen Hawking, and Bossun, the charismatic leader. Look for this one to get a license from VIZ in the future.

Machi de Uwasa no Tengu no Ko
Machi de Uwasa no Tengu no Ko
Machi de Uwasa no Tengu no Ko (Town Gossip about the Tengu's Child) by Nao Iwamoto (Shogakukan)
Never tangle with a tengu! Tengu are a tricksy Japanese youkai that may protect you, but may also turn against you. Akihime is the daughter of a tengu who wants to live as a normal human.

 Shinya Shokudou
 Shinya Shokudou
Shinya Shokudou (Late-Night Restaurant), by Yarou Abe (Shogakukan)
Adapted into a popular live-action drama, Shinya Shokudou revolves around an unusual restaurant open only after midnight and featuring just one dish per night-- unless, of course, you'd like to order anything else at all.

Okay, kids: tell me (and any potential English-language licensees watching!) what titles you're interested in! I'm pretty intrigued by both Shinya Shokudou and Sket Dance, myself.

I've actually read Penguin no Mondai, I loved it...but I also have a strong bias towards penguins.

I've seen the Sinya Shokudou drama actually, and I really really enjoyed it, so I may give the manga a try.  I didn't even realize there was an adaptation.  The drama is fantastic though.

@Addfwyn: Penguins are awesome! And I'm glad you enjoyed the drama-- hope someone brings the manga out. :)
