More ASOS Hijinks: Original Dub Cast Returns

Wendee Lee and company will return as Haruhi and crew.

Some news from the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya front! For those of you who were curious as to whether the new ASOS Brigade's Haruhi-- voice actress Cristina Vee --would play Haruhi in the second season dub, word has just been released via another ASOS Brigade video that the original cast is returning for the second season. Which is good, because since the second season should theoretically be watched interspersed with the first, it'd be weird if Haruhi's voice changed from episode to episode. Even if Cristina Vee does make a pretty good Haruhi.

By the way, you really should watch this video past the credits. Just sayin'. You'll like it.

Anyway, the dub cast returns. If you're too lazy to watch, that's:

It also sounds like they'll be re-recording each Endless Eight episode separately*. Now, I have generally hard that when a voice actor records for an English anime dub, they're supposed to give three solid readings for the line, so that the different takes can be spliced together for a relatively fluid-sounding dialogue. Let's assume that there are always a couple of duds, so each actor has to say each line maybe five times total.

Now multiply that times eight. Can you imagine saying the same line forty times?! Yeesh. (Okay, okay, odds are good there'll be some overlap, but still. Yowch.)

(* For the six or seven of you who don't know, Endless Eight is an arc in the second season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in which the same basic events take place multiple times; the eight episodes are nearly, but not quite, identical to one another.)

So, what do you think? Yay for the return of the dub cast, wish you were getting more Vee action, or don't care because you'll just listen to the Japanese version?

YES I love Cripin freeman as Kyon, and Wendee Lee as Haruhi! WoOoOt....
Cant wait to se the endless eight.... I still have to watch em.... in english....
cuz I watched them in japanese already.... and as a fan.... I just have to again....

I originally watched Haruhi in Japanesse, and about a week or so ago I saw a trailer of the English version...

I have to say that the english dub is really good! Haruhi's voice fits so well with the character...

Although that no Vee makes me sad.... I wish they'd have more ASOS episodes... it seems like one is coming out per month!
Ep. 2 is hilarious!!!! (After the credits!)

Was that another Yuki... or the same one just without glasses?

I can't wait for the 2nd Season...

Is there a box set for season 1?

Tempestangelon March 25, 2010 at 4:25 p.m.
@sora_thekey:
hmmm... theres a box set out for S1 I have it
I'm sure if you look around enough you'll find it

Your looking for a big box with this on the back

Eh, don't care because I will watch it subbed. I don't like how they "announce" this stuff. It seems less official and more like rumors.

I will say this news puts less doubt that season 2 would be released in the US. I won't be really sure until I see a release date or actually see the DVDs.
CrazyCanuckon March 25, 2010 at 4:40 p.m.
that was a close one  I actually thought they would give Vee the part of Haruhi.  Why do people think   Cristina Vee would make as good Haruhi?  Personally she makes me want to take a hammer and nail to me ear drum!

@Tempestangel: What's on the front then?
VinceAon March 25, 2010 at 4:53 p.m.
Good to get official word of the English cast's return. Never could get the hang of listening to Japanese female voices. Way too high pitched for my personal taste.
scottfryeon March 25, 2010 at 5:05 p.m.
@VinceA What English VAs can't have high pitched voices? And not all Japanese female voices are high pitched.
giaon March 25, 2010 at 5:22 p.m.
@scottfrye: True! One of my favorite voice actresses in Japan, Romi Paku, has a pretty low voice. She mostly plays young men (Ed Elric, Hitsugaya), and occasionally older women (Hamutz Meseta).

Hey, I wonder if that after the credits bit is a reference to this meme?

HONYAAAA~!

But anyway- I LOVE the Haruhi dub cast; Wendee Lee was the only one who took a while to grow on me, so I was one of the few who wouldn't have minded seeing Vee give the role a shot.  But whatever!

Endless Eight is totally an exercise in repetition with VERY small variations for the animators, the audience, the characters, and for the voice actors!  It's the little differences and all the effort that goes into each repetition that makes those episodes such an interesting experiment, and dare I say, such a fascinating work of art?

Can't wait....

The ending was very good! I won't be buying season 2 though I disliked it, mainly thanks to Endless Eight.
metalsnakezeroon March 25, 2010 at 7:35 p.m.
Personally Wendee Lee did a good job with Haruhi so why not have her again.
devilleonxon March 25, 2010 at 8:35 p.m.
Im really glad the old voice cast has returned!! It can be weird watching season 1 of an anime and then in the next season they change and you have to get used to them AGAIN!
VinceAon March 26, 2010 at 12:42 a.m.
@scottfrye:  Correct, not all female Japanese VAs have high pitched voices. Just way too many, in my opinion. Also, there are English VAs that have high pitched voices but usually not as high as their Japanese counterparts.

i love that the ASOS brigade does not seem to be able to hold a Yuki in their group, I wonder what the cause of that is other then "temporal shifts"
Tempestangelon March 26, 2010 at 3:53 a.m.
@sora_thekey:
Oh the fronts like a boring ass pic of Kyon, Haruhi and that blue giant thing...
zynon March 26, 2010 at 6:10 a.m.
Bad acting is bad.

Endless Eight was so well done that I am totally surprised!
I means sure I was totally angry at the fact that it took 8 episodes for the story to end, but as I was watching them I couldn't help but watch the next episode to see if I could find a difference between the next...

How I saw it was that we (the fans) watched that 8 times, when that was over I was relieved, but then I though... Oh god! Yuki went through it 15,532 times!
In the end I couldn't help but feel bad for her... and maybe that was the point!

I read in the internet that people were comparing it with Groundhog day but this was way better!

This should not be a surprise. The same happens for live-action dialogue.

Oh, and Haruhi Series Two is a no-go for me as they ruined the art style. ("Ruined" is putting it gently.)
Konandaon March 26, 2010 at 1:15 p.m.

YES! I can't wait to hear the dulcet tones of Crispin Freeman doing Kyon and Wendee Lee as Haruhi along with everyone else. I'm glad that the possibility of Christina Vee as Haruhi was just something they were teasing the fans about. That is something I do not want, it's not as bad as not having Crispin Freeman as Kyon but it would still suck.
