MONSTER HUNTER PORTABLE 3RD Trailer

Previewing a zoo of nasty creatures...

Courtesy of Gigazine, we’ve got the trailer for Capcom’s MONSTER HUNTER PORTABLE 3 for the PSP, the latest (and greatest?) in the MONSTER HUNTER series. But enough preamble, go on and check it out for yourself.

Huh… that’s an odd mix of whimsy and grandeur in the music to this trailer, which features quite the menagerie of fantastical creatures.

You’ve got what looks like a pretty serious fantasy swashbuckler roaming around townsfolk who are of the cute, cuddly and cartoony variety? Anyway, my favorites out of the monsters we get fleeting glimpses of here were definitely that armadillo bear hybrid and the sand dolphins who jump so playfully in and out of the desert dunes. What’s the deal with insinuated peep show at the end, though? Has pond bathing factored in a lot to the previous iterations of the game?

 The dolphins I speak of.

What do you think, oh creature-tracking Anime Vice community? Does this trailer make you want to strap on some gear for another MONSTER HUNTER adventure? Or does it make you wish the series had ended with FREEDOM UNITE?

I just don't get what Japan sees in this franchise. Usually my tastes coincide with Japan rather than the West, but MH is probably the most boring-ass game I've played in my life. It's just... ugh, I hate it so much. As someone whose favorite games include Kingdom Hearts II and Devil May Cry 3, I just can't play something as slow-paced as this. If I want an MH-like experience, I'll just go play Phantasy Star or Guild Wars.

Played Freedom Unite for about 120 hours, but a lot of the monsters there ended up feeling like reskins, doing the same charging and sidestepping animations as each other so I eventually got bored with it. It didn't help that my only friend who was into MH had the Japanese version so we couldn't play together.

Will probably take a pass at this seeing as I could just play my PsP game more, but I will likely get TRI when it comes out, now that it's been announced that the online play will be free. To bad about the Hunting horns and the Gunlances though, the were cool.

Have those been removed? I think the hunting horn was like... my favorite part of playing... when i was strapped to a chair and forced to party with friends.

@John_Martone:  I think Gunlances, Hunting Horns and Twin Blades got cut from MH Tri, while they introduced Medium Bowguns and the Slasher Axe. This portable version seems to be based off of MH3 with the monsters and the Slasher Axe present. However there was also a Gunlance in the trailer, which makes me sort of happy.

I really liked the Hunting Horns though and used it as my main weapon in the beginning. I was all for hunting to the beat, but in the end it was a bit to hard to play, I guess I wished I could get the notes to come quicker instead of a predetermined pace. It was also a pain when you upgraded to a horn with more attack power only to get a set of notes you didn't want.

If I had, had friends to play with I might've stuck with it, but playing alone was just not fun so I switched to the Long Blade.

EDIT: Bows are also gone.

@cfatalis: Oh, you won't have to worry about killing those guys anymore...

That's a lot of weapons getting cut.

I dunno, I've never made it particularly far in the game. Just long enough to like, upgrade my weapon once or twice... and then never play that character again. We'll get new people, or a new version of the game, or old people with too high of characters would start over to party...  Basically, I never, ever got very far.

To be honest, its a fun game, but with the type of playing we do, I get a little tired. I've never gotten to a point where I felt my actions were varied much by fight, or necessary for team success.
