Tokyo may have lost out on its bid to host the 2016 Olympics, but don't worry, Japan-- you've still got the 2012 Manga Summit! This year it's going to be held in Tottori, the capital city of the prefecture of the same name, a ways west (and a touch north) of Tokyo-- which is also the hometown of Jiro Taniguchi, a famous mangaka in Japan, best known for the Fanfare/Ponent Mon-released Distant Neighborhood and The Ice Wanderer. The summit features representatives from Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Perhaps someday the US and other western countries will get to send their own delegates?

Japan has hosted the event only three times, the most recent being in '08-- which was also the most recent occasion for the irregular event. The special guests for 2012, which will be the 10th such event since its inception in '96, will include Gegege no Kitaro creator Shigeru Mizuki and Detective Conan creator Gosho Aoyama, which should make for some pretty interesting discussions.
